This review is from: Lenovo IdeaPad S205 11.6-inch Laptop (Black) - (AMD E450 1.65GHz, 4GB RAM, 320GB HDD, LAN, WLAN, BT, Webcam, Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit) (Personal Computers)
I brought this Lenovo Netbook for use at university, and I must admit it is a fantastic piece of kit! I was interested in this netbook because of the fact that it didn't have one of the Intel Atom CPUs. The AMD APU inside this netbook isn't the best, but with the 4gb RAM it is a quick, and can pretty much handle any application; just don't expect this to run any intensive games!

Pros:

The size and weight is ideal, making it convenient to use and carry
The 11.6 inch screen displays photos and videos beautifully
I have also installed Windows 8, and it is very quick and responsive!
Offers HDMI as well as VGA video output
Battery is pretty good, lasts a lot longer than a laptop
Generally a great build

Cons:

Keyboard layout is a little unusual, as the function key is on the left of the control key, so sometimes I accidentally press the fn key
No lights on the actual unit to indicate caps lock, instead a software app needs to tell you
Wireless Card is poor, struggles to maintain a strong connection, even after updating the drivers

Despite the above cons this netbook is a great buy, and I have never looked back since!

1.0 out of 5 stars Nice Netbook for five months, trackpad and OKR system both useless., 2 Jan 2013

In mid July my Acer netbook died on me and I needed a replacement fast so I strolled into John Lewis Westfield (sorry Amazon but I really was in a hurry) and walked out three hundred quid poorer but with an s205, and if this review had been written at any point in the first five months of ownership (apart from truly deranged so-called features*) it would have rated five stars. However in five months almost to the day the cursor became skittish, then suicidal, then the central bit (but only the central bit) of the track pad died.

Accordingly I bought a usb mini-mouse with a retractable cable in a pound store for a couple of quid and got on with life until I could call Lenovo tech support from a landline, which is still as expensive as hell, particularly when they kick of by telling you their records say the one year warranty starts to expire the day the thing is shipped to the vendor, not when you buy it. Now I'm not legally trained but I'm guessing neither was the tech, since he couldn't explain how that wasn't illegal under UK law but only a fool waits for a complain to be escalated so they can argue with a helpine supervisor who also tried to get me to sign up to a premium support package that cost more than the s205 so I asked for the usual diagnostic checklist and after about twenty minutes it was conceded that there might possibly be a problem but that unless I had dropped it, poured water over it or fed it to my pet alligator the problem probably related to the usb mouse.

I explained I only fitted it AFTER the trackpad died but the tech wasn't convinced. (Of what exactly I'm not sure. Maybe Lenovo get a lot of hoax calls at fifty pence a minute.) the upshot was I should back up my data - already done - then use the One Key Recovery (OKR) application. The logic was either it would fix whatever software glitch was suppressing the trackpad or it would erase all my data from the hard drive so it could be shipped to Lenovo to have a new trackpad fitted. Now I'm not certain but I read somewhere to erase data you have overwrite the entire disk with random ones and zeros but again I didn't want to waste my breath and hard-earned money arguing that point either.

Since I needed a portable until the Christmas/New Year lull I said thanks (I was being ironic but you knew that) and went on-line. I discovered far from being a one-off this problem has arisen enough times multiple hundreds of fellow-sufferers have detailed identical problems and solutions that worked for them. (Or not.) About half needed the driver uninstalled then re-installed using either the manufacturer's generic driver or the tweaked brand-and-model-specific version, ie Lenovo's own version, which could be found on their support pages. I tried both and neither worked so I tried to use the OKR button.

In theory this would return my netbook to 'factory fresh' condition but the system hung repeatedly. Booting into safe mode and activating the OKR application revealed the application couldn't identify the factory installation stored in hidden partitions, which incidentally can;t be checked to see if they are installed without breaking OKR in the same way it was already broken.

That meant the only thing OKR is good for is burning a manually-created backup point to DVD - exactly like a Windows backup - so one gets an image on several DVDs. At this point attentive readers will have noticed something weird*, namely this is a NETBOOK and by definition netbooks don't have an optical drive (which is the only part of the OKR system that actually works, but I dutifully used my disks and got the netbook back ot the state it was in a quarter hour after I unpacked it and guess what?

That's right, the middle bit of the trackpad is still dead, the side paddles still work and I still need to find a flat surface and connect a mouse to use what is supposed to be a mobile device so I won't be calling Lenovo. Instead I will take it back to John Lewis next time I am passing through Stratford City and ask them very nicely if they could deal with Lenovo on my behalf. If I am really lucky they will also give it up as a bad job and offer me a credit note.

Needless to say until Lenovo fixes a lot more than their trackpads I will be looking elsewhere.

* The Veriface feature enables users to lock themselves out of their own systems if they fail to use it in the same lighting conditions, adopt the same posture, chose a dull and never, ever forget to remove their glasses. In an episode of Spooks maybe, but on a NETBOOK? Another deranged feature is a 'best battery health' power setting that automatically defaults to 'thrash your battery to death' whenever you aren't looking. A more suspicious mind might suspect these 'features' were sabotaged by a competitor if they weren't all over Lenovo's promotional material. Since others have already mentioned bloatware I suggest you check out free alternatives like LibreOfice, Opera as a combined mail client and browser and VideoLan's uber-competent player/streamer/converter, all of them small, fast and best of all, free.

I bought this laptop for its portability and flexibility to handle almost everything I might need to run on it. My 14" laptop is too heavy and big to lug around everywhere and my Samsung tablet doesn't run Windows and its a nuisance trying to do serious office type work on it. This little beauty is simply perfect. Its light, really well made, fires up fast, has a long battery life, especially if you disable the battery life extending option to only charge the battery 50% (when the computer is used mostly on the mains) and it handles even the most complex of processing programmes. Sure, all the MS Office progs run fine - as you would expect - but it will also whiz through video processing using the professional version of Sony Vegas editing package. In short, this is possibly the best all-round computer I've ever owned, and I've had a lot! It runs quiet and cool even when stretched and its just the right size and weight to put into virtually any bag. Of course, if you want a machine to run the latest high load graphic video games at full spec then this isn't it but for anything 'normal' I don't think anyone would have a problem. Also, the supplier I bought from - 'Kikatech' were great on delivery and packaging etc.

I ordered the Lenovo S205 through Amazon based on it being a good price and my very positive experience with 2 other Lenovo laptops in the family. Sadly, the netbook which I was sent had a twisted keyboard, meaning it wobbled on a flat surface like a table - very annoying! Amazon were great, getting me a replacement out extra quick because it was a birthday present for my daughter. Very annoying though when the replacement turned out to have exactly the same fault. All Amazon could do was offer to give me a refund. By that time it was too late to make alternative birthday present arrangements so we kept it and stuck a sticky foam disc under one foot to keep it stable. The result is something which works fine but is visually flawed and will continue to annoy rather than give pleasure. It would be good if Amazon could check a replacement product before sending out to ensure against continued disappointment.

I got this product in June this year 2012 and everything was fine till i had to go upstairs to my bedroom which is where I use the internet the most and the machine would just NOT connect to the WiFi and when it does, the signal would be toooo low for anything to be done.
I sold it on eBay sharpish and got myself a beautiful Sony Vaio with the same specs and much better connection. My immediate last laptop was a Vaio too and I should have stayed with it. Sadly, I wont be going near a Lenovo again!!

This computer is great for students or for people that just need a basic laptop. The reason why i only gave it four stars is that sometimes, it is a little slow( however it might be because of my settings) and my one has some problem with the wireless connection. While Lenovo the customer service of Lenovo was really helpful, i still sometimes cannot connect to the internet or there is problems connecting to the internet.

Besides that, i am really happy.

I am usually a fan of Lenovo notepads. However my reception of the S-205 is very mixed. Look at the pros and cons and decide if you want to risk it.

Pros:
1) Great keyboard to fit on a laptop of this size. As usual this is the best attribute of a Lenovo as opposed to their competitors.
2) Good compatibility with E-450 APU and expectable performance
3) Overall solid build and battery is help very effectively.

Cons:
1) Hard Drive/ Fan noise!!! Over the last 2 weeks have have exchanged 4 of these laptops from Amazon and 3 of them suffered from this fault (the fourth did not have the noise + vibrations, but had a badly inserted keyboard). The laptop literately vibrates. This is especially annoying when resting hands on keyboard.
2) Battery does not last as long as other e-450 machines that I have used, but nevertheless if tuned using software lives for a good while. (Decent software battery management tools included)
3) Week WiFi reception. But in case of small house- should not be a problem.
4) Bloat-ware. Lots of software that will not help you and should be deleted as soon as you get the laptop.

Without the annoying keyboard vibration (Which is Hardware related, and can NOT be fixed via software), this laptop would get 4 stars from me.

4.0 out of 5 stars The best netbook with only one flaw, 14 Sep 2012

I've always loved netbooks, I bought one the moment they came out. The combination of small size, low price, usability and battery life had attracted my attention from the first moment. All these years I've had quite a few different netbooks, but as years are passing buy, even the Internet has been increasingly difficult for a netbook to handle, so I decided to step up and buy a new and more capable. The choice was between a modern dual core Atom with nVidia Ion2 and a modern AMD-based one. I went for the second one, because the all-in-one APU seemed to me the better choice. Among these, the Lenovo cought my attention, because of the company profile, in my eyes Lenovo is a modest, silently working company that does its job without much fanfare. So there it is, the Lenovo Ideapad S205 with and E-450 CPU, 4Gb RAM and a 5400rpm 320GB HDD. Let's see it a little more closely.
CASE
The Ideapad chassis is solid for its category. It sports plastics of good quality and a fine wave pattern on the palm rest area around the touchpad, which makes it a joy to touch. The keyboard is probably the best I've used on a netbook, spacious, with a nice feel. The touchpad is also very good. Some say that it's small and they may be right, but it is precise and as sensitive as it should. Its buttons feel good and they are not too stiff, nor too soft. The lid is not the steadiest I've seen, it is a little flimsy, but nothing really serious. The inside of the laptop (yes, I've opened it, later on I'll explain why) is really neat and well-made, with many heat-absorbing surfaces and attention to detail.
SCREEN
The only weak link. The screen has the good resolution of 1366X768, but it has a glossy screen and a below par brightness, contrast and viewing angles. This is not a deal breaker, but if it had a better screen, it wound get my 5-star rating.
PERFORMANCE
This little thing is fast. It is easily the fastest netbook I've worked with and it can handle all of the everyday tasks you could throw at it. It is perfectly HD content capable and thanks to its HDMI output, it looks very good on a HD TV set. If there is something to improve, that would be its HDD. I fixed that by adding a Kingston SSD now V+200 120GB SSD, which really helped this small thing to take off. Battery life is good, you can expect an average of 4 to 5 hours, ranging from 3 (playing HD content) to 7+ hours (working offline on a document).
FINAL VERDICT
Yes, it's pricey. With this money you can buy a "real" notebook, which will be faster. But if you want something small, fast, with good built quality and great after sales support (Lenovo is really good at that), then this should be one of your first choices. The screen is below par, but let's be honest, Lenovo had to cut down on the cost and this was the way they chose. A really good combination of size, performance, battery life and quality.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lenovo IdeaPad S205 Notebook, 26 Aug 2012

This review is from: Lenovo IdeaPad S205 11.6 inch Netbook - Black (AMD E450, RAM 4GB, HDD 500GB, WLAN, BT, Webcam, Windows 7 Home Premium 64 Bit) (Personal Computers)
It is now 5 months since I purchased the Lenovo ideapad S205 and I can honestly say it was an excellent buy. I was looking for something small and mobile but powerful enough to run everyday office applications, surf the web and stream video seamlessly. The S205 has not disappointed and proved to be a little powerhouse. In fact it's so good it's also temporarily replaced my aging desk top at home.

The machine is light and compact so can be transported easily in the same case with my work laptop. The power management system is efficient and the battery lasts for 6 hours plus. The keyboard and touch pad are well designed and perform smoothly. I don't play video games but I do run a top chess engine and this is handled perfectly by the generous 4 GB of memory. The 500 GB hard drive provides ample storage space and runs very quietly. The WiFi connectivity is strong, always finds the signal and locks to it without interruption. The Windows 64 bit Home premium operating system is impressive and ensures fast, reliable performance.

Overall a quality product proving to be a sound purchase and very reliable. Excellent value for money, I would definitely recommend it, 5 STARS.
