Toshiba AT300 32GB 10.1-inch Tablet (nVIDIA Tegra T30SL 1.3GHz, 1GB RAM, Micro HDMI, Micro USB, Card Reader, Android 4.0)

After a disappointment attempting to buy this product with another seller, Amazon provided an excellant and speedy service at their busiest time just a few days before Christmas. I am a very experienced computer person dating from the 70's and new exactly what I wanted my tablet to do and what sort of price I was prepared to pay. The Toshiba AT300 came out near the top of my evaluations and the realistic price clinched it. It is easy and a pleasure to use and does the same as most other tablets. It appears to be well made and it's light weight makes it easy to hold. I like the micro hdmi connction. However, the power plug and lead is a turn off due to it's rather cumbersome size and cable thickness. It is just to cumbersome to conveniently carry around. A shame after building a tablet which is lighter than most. Some reviewers complain about light bleed around the edge of the screen. Yes there is a little but it is only visible at the edge in a couple of spots and only when viewed in a dark environment and with the near blank dark screen on start up. It is not visible at all with the normal working screens. Overall I am quite impressed and recommended it to anyone not wishing to go down the 'I' route.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant Piece of Kit, 30 Dec 2012

This review is from: Toshiba AT300 16GB 10.1-inch Tablet (nVIDIA Tegra T30SL 1.3GHz, 1GB RAM, Micro HDMI, Micro USB, Card Reader, Android 4.0) (Personal Computers)
To be honest I have only owned this tablet for a few days and my knowledge, sadly, is not up to the level of many of the reviewers, however, having created a list of 'requirements' about what I wanted the tablet to do for me, this one ticked all the boxes. So I have bought it and am very pleased with it so far.

The price offered by Amazon (Marketplace) is very competitive - just see for yourself when surfing the net. There are vast differences in prices. Do be aware however the one I purchased has an 'Ice Cream Sandwich' operating system rather than the 'Jelly Bean' system - if you want this later system, and this tablet, there is a different version of it - look for the letters 'SE' added to the model number. But you'll have to pay more.

Some tablets do not have access to the BBC Iplayer App - this one does. And it has Micro to HDMI connectivity. Also you can add extra memory with (standard size) SD type cards - I think up to an additional 64GB but do check - though will you need this much more on top of the existing 16gb internal memory ? I have added another 16gb for now. Wifi connection is easily set up. I have a fast broadband speed so whether a slower broadband speed will make any difference I do not know.

Some have mentioned 'light bleed' - you might notice this when tablet is first switched on - along the top and bottom edges but frankly once you start using it for any reason this is not noticed, at least not in my experience. The picture quality is excellent, well, more than that - stunning - but to be fair I have not compared this 'side by side' with other tablets so if you're an Apple Ipad fanatic, for example, you might disagree.

For further information, this tablet did get a 4 star (out of 5) rating in a computer magazine I subscribe to.

So along with all the other reviews, consider my words of advice before making a final decision and make a list of what you need a tablet to do, and check it does this before you buy. There appears to be a lot of rubbishy tablets out there if many of the reviews I have read prove to be right, so do be careful when spending your hard earned dosh ! As my magazine put it in the latest issue, don't spend your dosh on dross. This tablet is NOT dross. Good Luck. I hope this has helped.

I had a look at all the notebooks I could find and decided that I wanted to follow the same browser format that I use at present. The Toshiba seemed the most versatile, having an HDMI, USB & SD card input/output. As it has the Google browser all my browsing bookmarks are ready to hand, so you can access anything that you have bookmarked using Google.
When you turn the Toshiba on, there is some light "bleed" around the edge of the screen, but this is not apparent except for the initial start up. In normal use the screen is crisp & clear with very good HD reproduction. The Microsoft office package translates very well into the inbuilt system and I have been able to view all my Word, Excel & PowerPoint information through a USB flash Drive. You will need a readily available conversion lead from micro to USB 2.
Battery lasts 6/7 hours continuous use, obviously much longer if you put it in standby mode as soon as you have finished with it.
Overall I am completely satisfied with the purchase, does everything I hoped for & more. Really glad I followed my instincts & went for the android system & didn't follow the crowd & get an ipad.

I looked long and hard at all the offerings in the tablet market and went for the Toshiba because of the powerful processor. I am still trying to come to terms with Android but so far I have no complaints. Easy to set up and use and the touch screen is is brilliant. John

This is the best value tablet around right now - at £250 for the 32GB version. A 10 inch screen is a minimum really if you want to comfortably use it for watching media. We bought as a family living room computer - in part to introduce our toddler to computers, because there are so many games available free on Google play (built in to the Toshiba's Android system) - so no need to keep buying small electronic toys. Touch screens are the easiest way for a toddler to learn and this also doubles up as a video player for him in the car. You can transfer video from your TV hard-disk recorder via your PC (loading the Toshiba's SD card slot or micro USB cable). Comes with a decent media player for music, video etc - but you can also download "VLC" for a fully flexible media player (again on Google Play).

Only negative is that there are not so many cases available for this tablet - in the end we bought a "Bobj Case" on Amazon for £20 (little expensive but robust). Bobj Heavy Duty Case for Toshiba Excite 10 AT305 AT300 - Bobj protective cover - Batfish Blue

Would also recommend downloading "Dolphin" web browser on Google Play, as it's faster and works well within the touch screen environment. It has 'add-ons' which easily allow you to watch video on sites like the BBC.

bought it early this week. delivered via CityLink and they are not the most reliable or customer friendly.

excellent product so far. there is very slight screen bleed in one corner but not noticeable when using the tablet. its only visible during boot up time.

i've used android based devices before and toshiba bloatware does not add too much on top of the basic stuff - which is good.

did 100s of comparisons before settling for this tablet as it ticks all the interfaces/connectivity required. it also has an inbuilt gps which i was a bit surprised about as i didnt see it anywhere in the amazon advert.

4 stars because the device failed to boot up properly once today. worked ok when i re-tried. ignoring it as a one time issue. but otherwise happy with the product.

Excellent tablet, grossly underrated in the gadget journals, some great, features like the SD card reader, a huge advantage over the iPad and I'd have thought essential for photographers, really useful for those using cards for sound, recording, Does everything you'd,expect at a great price, and seriously scores over the iPad and the trendy 7 inch Androids.

Toshiba AT300
The tablet is well built pleasant to hold and use. Setting up date, time and wi-fi was easy. I’ve downloaded Chrome which seems faster and easier to use than the built in browser. Battery life is good with about three hours use a day plus four or five on standby, requiring a five or six hour charge about every three days. My only real complaint is the almost complete lack of any “how to” information. The installed User Guide is of little help and seems to deal only with the hardware side of things with nothing much on how the operating system works. I’ve been involved with PC’s since the early 80’s using from using the old IBM DOS through the various Windows incarnations but Android is such a different animal I cannot be the only user to want a better manual. I thought I’d buy one of the books available on the Android OS but reading the reviews they seem either to be biased towards the phones or of little value.
To sum up - a nice piece of kit that would be even better if I knew how to use it properly.
I would recommend it to a friend

The tablet does everything you want it to do and will rate 5 stars when more Android Apps are available, e.g. Sky Go and ability to download from BBC i-player
