Was a little apprehensive when buying this, especially as it was refurbished, but can say I am really happy I did. The details said there was a minor cosmetic imperfection, but 2 months later I still haven't found it, was in very good condition.

As for the laptop itself, I chose it due to the price, which was cheaper than anywhere else I looked for a laptop with this spec, and due to having a HP laptop before. I am definitely not disappointed with it, it's really good value for money.

I haven't really experienced any of the overheating or freezing issues that other buyers have, the only thing I have experienced is that it wouldn't turn off at one point so had to hold the power in to force shut down, but after that I have never had any other problems. I do find it a little on the heavy side, but I personally don't find it a problem as it is a great laptop and the aluminium casing is really beautiful and also gives it a more sturdy feel.

I always have a lot of programs open and at once (ie Photoshop, Illustrator, Word Office, Google chrome, Windows Media Player) which any other computer/laptop I've worked on can't handle, but this laptop hasn't had any problems with this, it doesn't even pause for a few seconds. The sound and colour quality is great, it goes really quite loud for laptop and the colours are bright and vivid. I also find the fingerprint scanner really useful, I didn't even know it had one before I purchased it so was really impressed when I got it!

I've also not had any problems with the wifi connections like other reviews have mentioned. I always have 4 or 5 bars when I'm usually always at the far opposite end of the house from the router, also it picks up neighbours' connections too so no problems here.

All in all, I would definitely recommend this laptop, it's a great machine, runs smoothly, looks beautiful and never had any problems.

I had major problems with the computer freezing up and crashing. I also had problems with getting the computer to switch off and then when I tried to switch the computer back on twice I got a blue screen and the computer had to go through a repair process that did not seem to make a difference. However Amazon have been very helpful and I will be returning the computer for a complete refund.

I am delighted with my new laptop no real problems setting up. I have not experienced any of the overheating problems experienced by other reviewers. Would thoroughly recommend.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good HP laptop with good overall performance, but eXtremely POOR WI-FI reception, 1 Nov 2012

This item was purchased recently- as "used but in very good condition" - from amazon.
And to be fair, it is in very good condition, both the exterior, and moer importantly, the internal components(hard drive etc).

The machine is an excellent machine, for the power-hungry, or technical(like my self) folks who develop what's inside these things for a living. It's also good for on-the-go movie-watching, music and other entertainment.

overall, I wuold rate this laptop as OK - GOOD value-for-money, given the price I paid for it.

The only (and very important) dissappointing factor in this laptop is it's horrendous wi-fi reception.
The wi-fi circuitory is either faulty(partically) or simply low-quality!

When i place my old laptop(an Acer 7720G) and this one(HP) on the same table(or various other locations) - my old laptop picks up all my neighbours' wi-fi connections, and am able to use them with 4-5 bars of signal power.
The HP laptop won't even pick up most of my neighbour's wi-fi and when it does, only with ONE bar. :(

It does not even pick up my own home's router with more than 3 bars (out of 5) signal-strength at a time.

I AM very very disappointed with this issue, as I have to use this laptop in large corporate environment- using Wi-fi base stations being on other floor; or, in B&B hotel rooms, with poor wi-fi signals(which my old laptop has no issues picking up).

please bear this issue in mind, as you may haev to buy a USB wi-fi transceiver, should you wish to buy this HP laptop and use it for wi-fi for serious work purposes!

Otherwise, good machine. 7 out of 10, for price, and functionality + power.

Cheers

I've had the laptop for about a month or so and really love it.

Great pictures/sound when streaming films or music! Very rare to have any multi-tasking problems and happily plays movies, browses and runs office programs at the same time.

Does everything I want of it and more!

Really impressed with the HP pavilion dv7 laptop as a warehouse deal, despite some concerns over the robustness of the build quality, could not seem to keep the battery in its housing and would not lock in for some reason (battery release catch seems flimsy). The trim area around the screen is a bit weak especially where you open the screen, would like to see a lip to open the screen without getting your finger prints around the camera lens. The lap top however is very good and has performed admirable whilst I am freelance training using several applications. Big bonus that it has the same charger as other laptops in the house, why do laptop manufactures not use a universal charger!

3.0 out of 5 stars Powerful, but heavy, runs hot and looks tatty really quickly, 2 Oct 2012

I have the core i7 version of this, and it's a powerhouse. But the white finish and fake chrome trim is a poor choice, it scratches easily and the "chrome" has worn off on the corners. It also runs extremely hot- in fact mine has just failed due to overheating and will need a strip-down.

Great sound, proper graphics card, powerful processor and loads of RAM and disk- it's a proper desktop replacement machine. Which makes the advanced wear and tear more galling, as it's not exactly had a hard life.

When you do need to cart it about, it's a great big lump of a thing and barely fits in a laptop bag. The charger is also a ghastly great brick of a thing, which adds to the problem.

Battery life is a barely adequate 2 hours, unless you turn off all the features (and the battery is dead after less than 3 years).

OK- but on the strength of this I won't buy another HP product.

Have had this for just over two months now and overall pretty happy, it is good value for the spec. A few extra points for prospective buyers though:

1) Power management default options disconnect you from wireless internet when you unplug from the mains. It's not obvious and appears to be just taking ages to connect. You can change the power settings so wireless is always on but it does reduce the battery life.

2) The second hard drive capability is not as simple to use as another reviewer suggested. There is, in the UK, no supplied long HDD connector cable for the second bay. Another buyer called HP and got one supplied; I called and got short shrift. You can apparently buy one from newmodeus in the US but it adds around £25 to the cost. This is IMO a very small saving for HP (it wouldn't cost them anywhere near that to fit it) and a big minus for the buyer.
