This generation of Sony Vaio has quite a few competitors from various different manufacturers. Such as The Hp Pavilion G7, More Powerful, and cheaper Acers, I5 powered Samsungs, and the forever falling apart Dell computers.

So, you'll be looking at the Vaio and thinking, why is this any better than any of it's rivals?
Well, for a start off, the I5 processor in this is slightly more powerful than the I5 in the Hp G7 series, it has a slightly bigger hard drive as well.
It's also built better than anything Acer or Dell has to offer. Yes, it is more expensive than both, but you pay for what you get. The Vaio has a properly solid feel to it.

I haven't mentioned Samsung systems yet. Samsung laptops are very good if you buy a mid range one. To be honest there isn't much point paying over the odds for one in my opinion as you can get the Hp / Sony which are both slightly better equipped when you pass the £450 region.

The Vaio also comes with a very nice Apple Mac-esque toolbar system, it clearly originated from Apple systems, but that doesn't stop it being a nice little piece of kit to use.
Great, you may be thinking. You'd be right too. The Vaio is a fabulous piece of kit which should certainly be considered for your next laptop.

The only real problem that this version of the Vaio has is the existence of the HP G7 really, I shall explain why.

The G7 series is built even better than the Vaio. So with your boring head on, you'd probably take the G7 just for the fact it'll last longer. The Vaio also shares a graphics card with the G7, which is the really pretty average Intel HD 3000. It's not a bad piece of kit, but it's certainly a long way away from class leading. It can't match some laptops for gaming, but then, you'll probably have a games console at home already, so Intel HD is good enough.

So, why would you take the Vaio over the G7? Simple.
Aside from the fact it's much better looking, it's nowhere near as rare. I should know, I have a G7. It was a total nightmare to find one. They are now so rare that in some places they command a £200 premium just to get one. I'm not quite sure what HP were thinking when they brought over so few G7 laptops to the UK, but it means a new G7 is around the £625 mark. The same sort of region as the Vaio. Now, if the G7 was available at it's rrp of £429 or so, I'd say no contest. Get the G7.
However, as this is not the case, the Vaio wins just by being better value with more processing power, and a bigger hard drive.

This one does come with Windows 7 though, so take note. I prefer 7 myself, but if you insist on having Windows 8, there are versions available with it.

The Good Bits: Nice Design, very good build quality, fairly well equipped.
The Bad Bits: The Hp G7 with the 2.4ghz I5 is stiff competition for the Vaio, which also has Intel HD 3000 graphics. Good luck finding one though.

Overall: A fine laptop. It looks good, performs well and should be more than reliable enough for studying, using for work, or just as a replacement for that old tower pc sulking in a cupboard somewhere. Looks best in white. 9.5/10

Also try: Hp Pavilion G7 1255SA, or mid range Samsung RV series if you don't need the impressive power of an I5 processor.

Brought to replace Acer 6920G, ordered Tuesday arrived Thursday. First impressions being a very good laptop from a well known brand for a knock down price - compared to the Acer its slimmer and lighter and considering its power the battery life is pretty good at just over 4 hours. The white surface is going to take some getting use to as finger prints are easily noticeable on the surface, but over all a solid built machine. The only gripe found so far is the track pads going take some time to get use to as Sony has decided to copy Apples trackpad and build the buttons directly into the trackpad surface.

I'm not a techno wizard, but I believe this Sony Vaio has an excellent spec.
I love its looks, and as a touch typist I appreciate the keyboard being white not black and having separate keys.
The one drawback is its sensitivity. I lose stuff because skimming over the keys moves emails, sentences etc all over the place.

I purchased the Laptop to replace a 17 Inch Toshiba Satalite 6 months old unfortunately it was not suitable for travelling only as a desktop replacement due to airport hasle also very poor battery life.
The Sony has proved a great purchase, I knew it would be as I bought one for my wife and was always jealous
Keyboard superb,Battery life good and no annoying adverts inbuilt to renew software after trial periods
Highly recommend sony products. Also excellent delivery and service from Amazon who I do use a lot because of the hassle free experience especially now with the prime service coming up to Christmas you just cannot beat it .

The laptop parcle was quite heavy, the laptop looks just the same elegant way as the pictures. However, the CD ROM is set with region limitions which i did not see from the information provided by the seller or the manufacturer.

Pros:
- Great looking laptop, far superior in appearance to anything in this price bracket
- Reasonably lightweight, comfortable to hold and fantastic build quality that you'd expect from Sony
- Perfect keyboard - beautifully spaced, making typing really easy. Inclusion of a numberpad is welcome.
- Good performance from the i5 processor

Cons:
- Could possibly find faster processor for £400+ spend
- Touch pad can be a little sensitive - if you're used to leaving one finger ready to click whilst using another to scroll, you may click inadvertently which can be frustrating

Overall:
- Fantastic laptop, beautifully made and looks great. Performance is solid and would thoroughly recommend!

Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Programme (What's this?)
There is no doubt that the latest Sony to carry the Vaio name is a good looking machine, but does it perform as smartly as it looks?
Well for my money, yes it does.
The i5 processor is a good one, and is pretty quick at doing most tasks, even with quite intensive graphics applications and watching online TV. BBC iPlayer is superb, and the sound quality is actually pretty decent for a laptop.
The 4Mb on onboard RAM certainly help to keep things moving along at a good speed, and the 640Gb hard drive will allow you to save even large movie and image files without making too much of a dent in your storage capacity.
If you do fill the hard drive you have so many options these days, including cheap hard drives and cloud storage, that you will probably never need anything bigger.
I don't really like trackpads as such, but tested this one and found it to be very sensitive and easy to use. I ended up turning off the 'multi-touch' elements of it and just using the simple drag and click elements.
I then connected an Amazon Basics wireless mouse (which I also use on my Mac) and it loaded up and worked without any fuss at all.
In fact, one of the nicest things about this laptop is the way that it just gets on with the job, without the constant user intervention that used to be required to do even the simplest of things only a few years ago.
Once you have removed some of the 'bloatware' things get even better! McAfee antivirus software seems to come with every new machine these days, but I removed it from mine, as I prefer Avast (which is free for all time, not just the first year).
There are 3 shortcut keys on the front panel which lead you to the assistance pages for your particular machine, the internet and the image gallery.
I was pleased that the Office software included on this machine was not the older Microsoft Works, but a much more useful Microsoft Starter edition featuring Word and Excel - pretty much everything you need.
I was also pleased to discover that the supplied Word package saved in the newest .docx format and not the old Works format. This makes it easy to share your documents with other users who own the full Office package.
The keyboard works well and they keys are a good size and well spaced. This model also has a separate number pad - not something that I can see myself ever regarding as an essential, but useful none the less.
I also like the dock which appears at the top of the screen. It's a bit of an obvious copy of the one that has been on all Mac computers for some time, but it is a quick and useful way of getting about.
There are also some neat little desktop 'gadgets' for a clock, weather update, etc which are handy to have.
My overall impression was of a well specified machine with plenty of power to undertake just about any task you care to throw at it. The only downside for me was that the case was very slightly twisted, so I had to put a blob of blu-tack under the front left corner to make it sit flat on my desk, otherwise it bounced up and down when I was typing.

I read previous reviews and thought this would be a good buy for my needs, and I defo right! Amazing, sleek and fast. Not had it long though, but so far have not had a problem. Only con is the touch pad, which at times seems a little loose, but thats probably only because I'm used to the mac touch pad. Great buy! defo worth the money =]
