I searched the web for weeks before deciding to purchase a Toshiba C855. Many other makes and models in this sort of price range were taken into consideration.
I eventually went for a C855 with an Intel i5 third generation Ivybridge CPU. I've now installed all my usual software and have just started to use it on a day to day basis. I decided to stay with Windows 7 (although it is now available to buy from Amazon with Win8) and the laptop boots up fairly quickly from cold.
It runs extremely quietly with hardly any noise from the internal fan and keeps very cool under all my normal computer requirements. I was a bit disappointed with its Windows Experience Index (WPI) giving only 4.7 as my daughters' HP G6 laptop with an earlier second generation Intel i5 gives a higher reading of 5.4
The keyboard layout is just OK - not brilliant. The keys are a little bit `squishy' not a lot of travel and not much tactile feedback - the spacebar could also have been a little longer on it's right side only just about reaching the letter `M' (why oh why do we need ALT.GR ?)
The screen - again - just about OK - I'm on full brightness and the viewing angles are a bit limited but it's very typical of most laptops in this price range.
So overall - it's not brilliant but for people like myself, it does the job....an everyday computer for browsing and email, letter writing and a bit of graphic and music stuff.
I'll just about give it a 7 out of 10 and will be keeping it BUT in retrospect I do wish I'd spent a little bit more on something with a bit more of this and a bit more of that .....
You really do get what you pay for.

I am delighted with my purchase. It looks great and is everything I would wish for in a laptop. It is the second Toshiba laptop I have bought and would recommend it 100 per cent. I tried several retail shops and could not find this model, but had no problem getting it at Amazon.
