This review is from: Archos Arnova 10 inch Tablet (4GB Memory, Android 2.3 Gingerbread, 1Ghz Processor) (Personal Computers)
Now i came across this after my mother decided she wanted something like an ipad to replace her old laptop. At first after reading some reviews i was quite impressed, people held it high regard and said it was decent.
The specs were also quite impressive for a cheap price.

Now obviously as with any tablet its going to be compared to the best out there such as the iPad and Google Nexus. Bare in mind the Nexus is only £150 and yes the ipad is £399. When my mother purchased this it was £139.99 from Comet.

Now build quality is the first thing i look at. This isnt great, plastic all over and its glossy meaning it looks constantly greasey and covered in finger prints. The screen isnt of the same quality as many other tablets, not even a patch on the expensive options or the Nexus7 which looks luxury compared to this.

The main shell itself is plastic and has the usual external ports like usb, the rocker volume buttons, charging port, headphones socket etc. The unit holds charge pretty well, a good few hours use before it needs charging.

Now the first gripe you will have is this thing is NOT quick despite what people are writing. I compared several things including browsing, launching an app etc against an iPad and my mobile phone the HTC One S, the tablet came last on everything, some things by a long way. It struggles with the 1Ghz cpu, it just isnt enough to run the machine and OS. Its laggy and realy shows that when you start switching between apps or doing anything intensive on it.

Also bare in mind this does NOT come with the standard Google Play Store, it comes with a silly market app made by Archos, but its easy to bypass and install the proper market app, just youtube it.

Now i know people will complain at this saying its not really meant for anything heavy going, but well if its claiming to be fast and other people are claiming it well wouldnt you want the truth? The cpu struggles on most things, launching the browser and then searching can make it lag, btw the browser is ugly!. For some reason, probably the resolution, everything looks ugly, if you rotate the screen into portrait mode its horrible, the screen looks blurred and warped.

If you do decide on getting this, i highly recommend you route it and put a custom rom on it, as it will get from from the device that way, but its still slow.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great value tablet with good video and sound., 13 July 2012

Easy to use operating system with nice responsive cap screen.
Watching HD video is pleasing, with sharp images and more then reasonable sound.
Networking easy to setup and the built in bowser is basic, but runs pretty quickly.
The Android Gingerbread OS is user friendly.
OK, there are some limitations on apps, but if you want a basic machine for bowsing the net, viewing videos and playing music this unit is great value. A micro SD card slot can be used to expand the on board 4 GB of memory.
The battery life seems good, enough for watching a couple of 90 minute movies.

Have had this tablet for little under a month and it is a good piece of kit. Graphics are good, responsive to touch, has a USB port which can be used as a modem port ( even better to use to plug In a external hard drive and walk around with a extra terabyte or two ; )

Would reccomend to anyone wanting a tablet and cant afford the pricey iPads and ultra books out there !

While the default o/s that comes with this tablet is lame and wont allow you the freedom to get apps off google market place, it takes just 5 minutes to flash with some free custom firmware and suddenly the world is your oyster. This tablet flies and sound and video quality through freely available winamp type apps is astounding .thousands of apps and games available free for android where the same titles are pay on ipad etc . The dual (type A and B) USB happily allow a wireless mouse or pen to be plgged in, and work fine if you prefer that to the touchscreen ( although the touchscreen is smooth, quick and crystal clear) in addition to the internal storage an SD or 3G sim can be added, or simply plug in a keydisk onboard wireless is great and it copes extremeley well for streaming audio, video and even skyping or similar VOIP. Overall as good as ( and in many ways better) than other far more epensive tablets. I can only pick fault with one thing and that is the onboard camera, its ok but the quality of images is poor by current standards.

I didn't purchase my Arnova G2 10 through Amazon (unusually for me) as a high street retailer had it for considerably cheaper.

I got the tablet to make using emails and my google calendar easier, and as the previous reviewer stated was dissapointed that I would have to use an app called hublife to sync my calendar.

However I found finless bob who does the custom ROMS (for free - I use v1.5) and that installs standard Gingerbread with Android Play (what used to be market) enabling me to choose nay App and get full intergration with google calendar - and is a bit more resource efficient to boot - since then I haven't looked back - I really rate the tablet - especially for those with a main computer who are just looking for web browsing/email/calendar without spending silly money.

Apps worth installing (with Play) are tweetcaster for twitter, Everyone should try Swiftkey tablet X predictive keyboard, Dolphin HD browser (Really impressive) and the usual suspects - for Calendar focussed have a look at Business Calendar.

For those who are looking for a cheap tablet I really cant recommend this enough - performs above and beyond expectations (and I'm used to borrowing my parents iPad 3's so well aware of what is out there).

1.0 out of 5 stars Great but then it broke ..., 18 Mar 2012

This review is from: Archos Arnova 10 inch Tablet (4GB Memory, Android 2.3 Gingerbread, 1Ghz Processor) (Personal Computers)
This was a great wee bit of kit that had Android 2.3, a camera and a big 10 inch screen.
GOOD
Android 2.3
Big screen
Fast processor
Very cheap
Android Market (not installable at the start)
Full size USB port
Camera (front only)

BAD
Screen has terrible viewing angles and black spots
Boot up is very very long
Not very stable
No Android Market out the box
Not Honeycomb or ICS based for tablets like this
Feels cheap

BUT WORST THING IS THAT IT RANDOMLY BROKE DOWN FOR NO REASON! AFTER 2 MONTHS OF USAGE!
IT JUST STOPPED BOOTING UP HOWEVER I GOT A REFUND AS I BOUGHT IT OUT OF HMV.

I would give it 4 stars ... But now just 1 ...
AVOID THIS

This can easily be confused with the Arnova 10 G2 which is an excellent piece of kit.
However, this product seems to be the old version (they've called it "c" - there is no "c") selling at £50 more with half the capabilities.

If Amazon don't do the 10G2 it can be found at HMV or carphone warehouse for under £140.
This is one to avoid until the price drops below £100.

After doing research on alternatives to the ipad I opted for the Archos Arnova 10 inch tablet. It does exactly what it says on the box - great for games.

Got this at carphone warehouse for 140, pretty good deal.
It's got
- micro USB (connect to PC)
- full size USB (flash drives / external hard drives - some recognized, some not)
- camera

no access to apps market (can put new image or download .apk to your pc then transfer via usb)

all in all would recommend for the price, very happy with it.
