I so wanted to love it. The pictures I saw of it made it look so much more than it was....I really thought it was a viable alternative to Macbook design at half the price but it is not. The positives-it is light and thin and performs quite well, and the SSD is fast and silent. However, the negatives far outweigh the positives. It is NOT made from aluminum, it is manufactured from silver coloured plastic, and the top is inlaid with a thin piece of aluminum. The keys are plastic and squashy and the keyboard is NOT backlit. the mouse pad was a nightmare, too sensitive by half and there was no left/right click buttons, instead you press the bottom left and right of the track pad hard to click...and this only works sometimes. The screen is OK, but nothing special. It is manufactured no better than a run of the mill laptop which would be half the price and have a much larger screen. Battery power was nowhere near the advertised estimates, I got 3 hours but to be fair I only charged it twice before deciding to return it. It's winging it's way back to Amazon now (but was collected by Yodel so Lord knows when/if they'll get it) and when my refund is processed I'll be spending a little more to get a Macbook. If you want an ultrabook I would urge you to take my advice and get a different one, this one is not worth the money it costs. Sorry to be so negative! I will never buy unseen again.

2.0 out of 5 stars keyboard mouse wifi issues make me want to give it away, 13 Aug 2012

I would return and replace if I could. I got my one on a site that does not allow this. Just typing and not even touching mouse pad (I have learned to keep well clear of it) and cursor jumps everywhere. The wifi is really unstable, often not connecting. Really really disapointed as although all else is fine with dropping wifi adaptor issue, keyboard jumping it means I often give up and use a desktop. it is a pile of ...

this computer is very poor in terms of quality. we ordered two, and sent back two. First computer, USB ports did not work.
Second computer did not start anymore, at all. don't buy it - too fickle.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ultrabook needed for work, 10 July 2012

This review is from: Acer Aspire S3 13.3 inch Ultrabook (Intel Core i7-2637M, RAM 4 GB, HDD 500 GB, Bluetooth, Windows 7 Home Premium with up to 6 Hours Battery Life) (Personal Computers)
Travelling and working abroad each week so needed to ditch the laptop brick. Looked into the Air book but needed something that would run Windows apps natively. Looked at various 500Mb HDD hybrids but kept coming back to the Acer Aspire S3 because of the build quality and robustness. The fact that it had an i7 processor helped make my mind up.
It arrived two days after ordering which is good considering I live in the middle of the Highlands. It took little effort to remove all of the trial software and load up the company software. Have the whole hard disk encrypted for work and was concerned that this might cause problems with the sleep/deep sleep function. No problems at all - it comes back to life quicker than I can open the lid or finish pressing the power button. The keyboard is good and feels sufficient quality to last the battering from being on the road all of the time.
I purchased 2 USB devices - 1Gb network and 4 port adapters and use them when in an office. They work well and provide the hard-connectivity required for prolonged office use. The wireless and bluetooth are great, what amazed me was the re-connection after sleep, including browser logon!
This is an excellent machine that I'm glad I went ahead and purchased.
Acer should be very pleased with themselves as this Ultrabook sets a very high mark for it's low price. Well done, a truly awesome machine!!!

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed, 1 July 2012

Ordering from Amazon was fine, product delivered next day as promised.
Although the Acer looks a nice product, for the price, it did feel a little cheap, especially when closing the lid, from the feel and noise it sounded like a basic plastic laptop.
You will need a USB extension as the USB slots located at the back mean you risk damaging a USB memory stick if you are trying to type with it on your lap, not a great design for a "laptop".
Keyboard was fine, once you got use to it, the keys were quiet, but the space bar was noisy and again sounded cheap.
Not much more I can say as the hard drive died after just 2 weeks, so returned to Amazon for a refund not a replacement.

4.0 out of 5 stars Acer S3 - Amazing machine but...., 24 May 2012

This review is from: Acer Aspire S3 13.3 inch Ultrabook (Intel Core i7-2637M, RAM 4 GB, HDD 500 GB, Bluetooth, Windows 7 Home Premium with up to 6 Hours Battery Life) (Personal Computers)
I have had the system for around 4 weeks now and have to say cosmetically and from a performance perspective it is awesome!
It's light enough to carry around but screen is big enough to do everything I like to do such as surf, watch movies, listen to music and play the odd online game.
The performance is excellent, everything loads really quickly and all round the system is very zippy.
Maybe the look isn't to everyones taste but personally i think it's stunning.

Those were all the good bits, now for the bad news. The battery life is fairly poor, i'm not getting much past 2.5 to 3 hours of usage.
The other issue is that the HD seems to be constantly reading/writing, it's been like this since the day I took it out of the box. I thought it was windows updates, etc that was causing it but 4 weeks on and it's still happening. Even when the machine is completely idle (turned on but no applications or anything running) it stills seems to be spinning away. It's not loud but seems strange and i'm worried it may make the HD bust.
I have logged the issue with Acer and the machine is being picked up tomorrow.

I am very happy with this purchase - it looks and feels good. The only down side is only two USB ports that are awkwardly situated at the rear. I saw this critique and didn't think it to be that important, but if you have to make connections it is really a pain to turn the machine round and half-close the lid while busy with a document. I also had to buy an HDMI to VGA converter to connect to the faculty projector. For the price, this is nevertheless a superb machine.

5.0 out of 5 stars I Love this wee Acer, 1 May 2012

It gets 5 stars from me because I love it, its so light and compact very easy to set up and use.I have read a few comments about the track pad, but frankly I don't have a problems with it, at first glance, the track pad doesn't look like it has buttons. However this is just because it not obvious to look at. Click and drag is as simple as holding down the left corner with one finger then using another finger to drag the file to wherever you want it, lift of the pad to place the item very easy really. I also like the way you can use the pinch method to zoom in and out with the track pad.

I do understand the gripe about the usb ports and power port on the rear of the ultrabook, but ti be honest its not a huge problem and I got used to it after a wee while.

The screen is good and clear and movies look good, although the ultrabook boasts dolby sound, its not great quality, having said that compared to the latops I have had in the past, the ultrabook is one of the better competitors. The absence of an optical drive was solved with an Samsung USB dvdrw. http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B005N2UE2O/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00

The 4gb of ram serves adequately, I understand that you cant upgrade this (but I may be wrong on that). The integrated HD graphics seam to handle everything I have thrown at it so far. I like to play the sims and sometimes in virtual worlds, and often the viewers used on those places can be a nightmare for graphics and don't always work well. This wee laptop however handles this without a problem.

The fan does get a little noisy sometimes, and the notebook does get a wee bit hot near the vent but its not and better or worse than all the other notebooks I have had.

A very nice wee laptop that doesn't take up a lot of space does what is expected of it and is simple to use. I am well happy with my Acer Ultrabook.
