I bought this laptop because I was after a light and cheapish laptop with a decent battery life and pretty good performance.So far I haven't been disapointed. I use it mainly for editing HD video and it has no problem with that. I also tried hooking it up to my external Bluray drive and then my HD TV and it played it with no problem.
Overall a good purchase but the next model up has been reduced, so I would think carefully if you need an i5 processor and more RAM, however I am more than pleased with this.
EDIT: Since I've had the laptop a few months, I (and a good few other people) have noticed an annoying problem with battery. It appears that the battery discharges even when the computer is shut down. After fully charging my laptop and leaving it for a week, the battery completely discharged to the point where it wouldn't even turn on. This seems to be a common problem with quite a few Toshiba laptops. It's not so much of a problem if you use the laptop regularly, but if you leave it for more than a week, expect it to lose a fair bit of power. Some people have reported losing 10% of battery charge per day, some less. Therefore I have changed my review from 5 stars to 3 stars on this basis.

Selected this laptop because it is just such a perfect screen size for the briefcase - this means its lightweight and the battery lasts all day - fan is very quiet and it runs mostly cool - happy with keyboard, touchpad and all the necessary connections including HDMI and 3 USBs - only complaint is the apalling speakers - they are just tiny and tinny and cannot be used for music playback - otherwise this is a lovely road warriors machine Only a few problems, By

great laptop i must say. i've been using one of these R830 series from toshiba and i must say that the battery life is amazing! i am a masters student and use this laptop a lot for many things and it actually takes me more than 12hours of usage!internet connectivity is also excellent. another thing i love is the weight. only 1.48kg i proudly carry it with one hand while i skype around my uni's breakout area. i love lightweight devices. if feels so so light but the built is solidly strong!only minuses: one important minus was an embarrassing moment with this laptop when the 'N' key of the keyboard came off as i was typing!! the only good thing is that i was able to fix it back into place with a click sound. But this happened about one month after again! well, i fixed it again though and hope it doesnt misbehave anymore. basically that has made me careful when i am typing because i dont trust the keyboard period. but for this i would have given this laptop all 5stars.
performance is great even with my i3 processor. it comes with some useless pre-loaded softwares from toshiba most of which i advise you uninstall to boost your performance.
conclusion: i will advise anybody any day to but this laptop. just be generous with the keyboard when u are typing and u will be good to go. my first toshiba and i think i love toshiba now! more importantly, i love the battery life! unprecedented in my laptop usage all these years of my life!!! very strong battery!!!!!!!!!! great work toshiba. just improve the keyboard to make typing more fun for some of us who type with speed. regards y'all.
