I am reviewing the quad-core i7 MacBook Pro after two weeks of use. This is my third 15.4" model in the last two years: I follow a strategy of upgrading my MacBook Pro as often as possible, and selling on my previous model immediately. Given the good re-sale values of Apple products, it makes some sense (the small premium for doing this compared to upgrading after several years is the price to be paid for always having the most capable&productive machine available for my business).

I bought mine with the 7200rpm 500GB HDD, 8GB of 1333MHz RAM and the optional 2.3GHz processor (comes with 8MB of L3 cache).

I am going to restrict this review to the differences I experience between this and my previous model (a 2.66GHz dual-core i7 with 8GB of 1066MHz RAM and a 7200rpm 500GB HDD, also reviewed on Amazon):

1) It vibrates/resonates much less, at least on my desk (when using the old model, there was a noticeable hum when the hard-disk was spinning).
2) The cooling fan spins up more readily. I guess it must, to cope with the additional processing power.
3) Wifi speed/sensitivity is appreciably better (not that it was particularly bad with the previous model, but it was much more sensitive than older MacBook models). I was expecting a significant improvement here, given that Apple apparently inserted an additional antenna into the new model. My best 802.11n speed at 5GHz has gone up from 216 to 270Mb/s, and does not vary as much according to position on the desk. It is usually achieving 243Mb/s; this is good, because my Time Machine back-ups and communications with my other computers take significantly less time.
4) The case feels a little bit warmer in normal operation. Given the additional processing power, this is not surprising.
5) Applications start up and shut down much faster. This is very important to me, given the many different apps I run each day. Microsoft Office 2011 is extremely fast, I am very pleased to say.
6) It scored 1243 in Novabench, compared to 788 for my previous model. So it is just over 50% faster, according to this measure; this is consistent with the video encoding (using Handbrake) improvement I saw when testing with a 1080p H264 file. Given that the old MacBook Pro was one of the fastest machines available, the performance of the new machine is quite a feat. It is genuinely a quad-core mobile workstation. Like the previous model, this is no mere laptop, it is a legitimate 'portable desktop' computer.
7) Battery life is still useful, but unsurprisingly it is about 75% of what the previous model could achieve. This is not so important to me given that I use the MacBook Pro as a portable desktop as opposed to a mobile laptop. For very mobile situations, my iPad comes into its own.

In summary, Apple have upped the game again, it seems.

This is my first experience of a Mac after many years of using PCs.

I won't go into all the techy details (I don't understand a lot of it!) as other reviewers have done that far better than I can, but my first impressions are very good indeed.

I was a little bit daunted by the prospect of using a completely different operating system after years of using Windows, but it doesn't take very long to get used to it, and when you do, it is so logical and straightforward. I wondered how I'd ever managed without it.

The build is superb, but at a price in my opinion. I have the 15.4" MacBook, and whilst it is absolutely gorgeous, it is rather heavy - I certainly wouldn't want to be carrying it around on a daily basis. I suppose if weight were a major issue, then the 13" version may be the way to go. There are a few minor niggles such as certain functions on the keyboard being different to what I'm used to (no delete key) and symbols in a different place (@) but these are minor details, and I can live with it.

Performance wise, it is blistering quick compared to my Vista PC - like a breath of fresh air!

It is still early days, but I am definitely a converted Mac fan! I still use my PC (because I have to) but I couldn't imagine my life without a Mac now!
