The Lenovo G770 is sold in various configurations with prices to suit, anything between £470 and £750. Mine was surprisingly well configlred with a 2.4GHz I5 processor, 8GB memory and a 750GB hard drive. At the price of £598 that I paid at Amazon it was a bargain. I chose to be able to burn double-layer DVDs rather than be able to view blue-ray disks - you really do have only the one choice. Within a week a similarly specified G770 was being offered on Amazon (as well as at most other suppliers) at £740. This laptop has a solid and quality feel to it. Both performance and graphic display performance as well as display appearance are good. For a 17.4" display laptop it's not overly weighty. Battery life is reasonable for a 17-incher, 5 hours browsing and word-processing but only 3.5 hours when doing processor-intensive video recoding. This laptop can be setup to "step-down" processor speed and graphics when running on battery, or can be set to run flat out all the time (with a resulting fall in battery life). The G770 comes with a very effective boot-time optimiser which ensures that the laptop is ready and raring to go only 40 seconds from startup. Both keyboard and finger-pad are among the best I've ever tried. It's a quality laptop with a fast processor and very good display. The case remains cool at all times, but the fan outlet on the left-hand side blows very hot air when the laptop is working hard. The G770 has no supplied software disk, which I admit did concern me, but it has a one-click "auto-repair" feature. What they've done is partition 30GB of the hard disk to hold a spare copy of the operating system and drivers - but this means the avaiable hard disk is less than the 750GB quoted. They've put a small recessed button on the laptop next to the power switch which automatically re-installs the supplied software from that partition. I'm always worried that a hard drive fails and becomes unusable (it's happened to me twice), so I always make a backup (using Paragon) of the whole hard disk, then when I've installed all my application software I make another backup.

A couple of niggles. The documentation that comes with the G770 is poor - almost non-existant. I tried Lenovo's website in vain, but quite accidentally I found a PDF manual hidden on the hard-drive which was adequate but nothing to shout about. The other niggle was finding a laptop case that you could get the G770 into. I visited PC World and out of all the 17-inch laptop bags there only one would accomodate the G770. It's fortunate that I didn't try to buy a laptop bag on-line - chances are my laptop wouldn't fit inside had I done so. One other thing that might concern some people is the high cost of a spare battery should you need one. Perhaps in time the the third-party battery suppliers will offer a less expensive spare.

But I'm very pleased with my Lenovo G770. I spent some time looking at the "price/performance" of most laptop offerings, and I'm satisfied that I made the best choice.

It actually looks quite good, with a dark brushed metallic surround, although greasy fingers do leave their mark. The keyboard has a nice solid feel and also has numeric keys on the right unlike some laptops and full-size arrow keys unlike some other keyboards. The machine feels solid but not too heavy. The screen is reflective but fine for me. The screen does not though have a very wide angle of view for acceptable viewing of video or photos, but as long as you are fairly straight-on it shows a good picture. Sound is loud enough although obviously small speakers mean poor quality, but I imagine no worse than other laptops.

Convincing arguments for buying this laptop from a company I was not familiar with, were for me the 8Gb RAM and a 2Gb graphics card (a comment was added to my review by another contributor that there is no dedicated graphics card and that it only has integrated graphics - however a later comment-writer confirmed that the graphics card is dedicated and quite powerful at that, that graphics card - AMD 6650 2Gb -is termed a "fast middle class graphics card" on the internet). A reviewer of an earlier model of this commented on the games ability Lenovo G770 17.3 inch Notebook (Intel Core i5 2410M 2.3GHz, RAM 8GB, HDD 750GB, DVDRW, WLAN, Webcam, Windows 7 Home premium) - Black As long as this machine remains reliable I will be very happy with my choice. It is very gently whirring as I type this, but is a lot quieter than other machines I have used. Its base is still cool although it's been on my lap for close on an hour now.

I subtracted a star initially because of problems I encountered on first use, leading me to delete the antivirus and use the "one key rescue" (which works!). There have been no such problems since and I see other reviewers have not experienced any, so am inclined to take the blame myself, but will still deny the fifth star since I do find the touchpad and buttons excessively sensitive at times, but have not come across any other problems.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Good Desktop Replacement, 7 Feb 2012

I have had this machine now for over two months and generally found it to be excellent. I use it as desktop replacement.
Plus points:
+ it worked straight out of the box with no set up difficulties;
+ screen glare, indoors, is much less than I expected and picture quality is excellent;
+ 8GB RAM and 750MB hard disk 17" screen is more than adequate and gives good performance and is good value;
+ 1 USB3 port
+ dual graphics and smart power management for extending battery life when you use it mainly on mains
Worth noting:
o the face recognition works well but only in very good light
o the machine boots from cold in about 40-50 secs.
o the bundled software (like most of the competition) includes a usable version of MS Office - Excel and Word
o the casing is fine if like me you don't intend to use it as a genuinely mobile device, but it gives me the
impression it wont take kindly to physical abuse
Minus points:
- it rebooted twice without warning in the first couple of weeks but not since
- the built in camera is disappointingly only adequate at best
- no external esata connectivity or card reader
- Windows 7 home premium doesn't have inbuilt support for backup over network (you need professional)
- The boot optimiser is a pain and I have disabled it
- MACAFEE is preinstalled but you only get one shot at the reduced subscription offer (which is before you get time to see if it suits your needs)

I am very pleased so far with the laptop, it has met all my needs.
