I bought this laptop a few weeks ago and I'm extremely happy. The keyboard is a little awkward to get used to. The layout includes a very small enter key and strangely placed del/home/end/pg up/down keys, but after a few hours on it these things aren't a problem.Performance is great. Needed to spend a few hours uninstalling all the Toshiba programs, but thereafter it runs like a dream. Great performance for photo editing and general use. I'm not a gamer so I can't really comment on this side, but I assume the i5 inclusive graphics aren't going to be as powerful as a dedicated graphics processor. For everyday use and basic gaming, I haven't found a problem.
The laptop is ultra lightweight and the charger small and light too. The machine seems solid despite how light it is. And the battery life is fantastic (around 8 hours for just web browsing). Toshiba have included some great little features like HDD protection and economy mode to enhance battery life, which is aided by the i5 boost technology.
Screen resolution is a little on the low side for my liking (1366x768) but the HD screen is bright and colours are vibrant.
Overall, I love it! Fantastic buy and suits my needs perfectly.

I am well and truly impressed with this R830-143. Having been used to my old laptop, which I could not carry around easily as it was heavy and gave me less than an hour on battery, I wanted something that could really deliver and not restrict me to a plug socket.I am by no means any expert on computing but I knew what I wanted from my laptop. I read and watched a lot of different reviews relating to the Satellite R830 and from what I can tell the negative feedback is a result of customers being unrealistic. This is not a mac, it's a Toshiba, so if you are after a shiny computer to improve your self image, buy a mac. Aesthetically, I am very happy with my R830. The part of the laptop you will be looking at most, no doubt will be the screen - which is bright and clear.
In terms of portability, this laptop is exceptional. Flicking through pictures I got the impression it may be a bit fragile, but in fact the R830 is robust, it's very thin, light and the battery performance is something else. With Eco mode you can get 8 hours on battery while web browsing, image editing or using the office tools. I thought the description may have been going over the top with the cooling system, but now I have had a chance to use this laptop for a while, I can say the laptop remains cool even when the fan is covered when it's on my lap. Another thing I am impressed with is how quiet it is. The only time I have even noticed the fan is when playing a DVD. Even then it was quiet and occasional.
The keyboard isn't a work of art, but it feels nice to type with and in my opinion is not too 'plasticy'. I like the track pad, the left and right mouse buttons 'click' a little more than I would like but it isn't a major issue. My main niggle was with the amount of unnecessary and memory sapping software that I had to uninstall. This included a lot of Nero software and some Toshiba software which I have no intention of using. After that task was done the laptop has run like a dream!

As you've probably already realized, this product is an absolute bargain. Its beautiful, light, packed full of functionality. My favorite laptop ever.The reason i've only given it 4 stars is because when it arrives, it's a little laggy and slowish. Not noticeable to most people, but i definitely noticed. I think its because Toshiba have pumped loads of rubbish programs into it. I'll be reinstalling Windows 7 from scratch tonight, hopefully this improves speed.
Also, the pictures above (minus the last two) are for the portege not the satellite, be careful!
