After about five months of using this tablet, I regret buying it. The USB charger socket in the tablet is already broke. More importantly, however, my love affair with the Android operating system is over. Why? I use, or at least I wish to use, my tablet to do very simple word processing, spread sheet editing, and reading PDF documents. All I want is to be able to switch easily between the applications, easily navigate through my documents and the ability to copy and paste data between applications. However, these basic operation are fiddly on Android. There is no sign of a mature user interface standard followed by applications. The keyboard and stylus input mechanisms are imprecise and leave a lot to be desired. Navigating through even moderately complex PDF documents is time consuming or, at times, simply impossible. (Yes, I have purchased and tried more than 5 PDF reader applications including Adobe Reader.) I can read these documents effortlessly on my iPhone. The updates are few and far between.

In short, ThinkPad tablet and Android operating system, these are two experiments, NOT products. To think I paid for it!

I own an Asus Transformer TF101 and an HTC Flyer tablet in addition to the ThinkPad, and have used Apple iPad 2. I wanted a tablet that I could use to take notes and perform some basic information processing tasks in spreadsheet format. I wanted to be able to jot notes as I can with paper and pen.

I must say none of the above mentioned tablets are good enough for what I want but ThinkPad comes close. The digitizer pen enables me to jot down notes without the problems (no, or poor palm-rejection support being the worst) I experience with taking notes on a capacitive touch screen such as that of Asus Transformer or Apple iPad. (That said, ThinkPad too has a capacitive touchscreen; it supports digitizer pen in addition to its multi-touch support/ability.) And, though HTC Flyer is just as good, its 7-inch screen is less than optimal for me. Note that I have owned and used a variety of capacitive-touchscreen stylii including Adonit Jot Pro, Pogo and Acase. With their fat tips they are simply not precise enough and, in my experience, even with the best available software the lack of proper palm-rejection rather spoils the whole experience.

The built-in note taking application (after update) offers excellent writing experience though little else as it lacks the features present in other note taking applications such as Freehand and Ever Note etc. Still, the ease of writing and the automatic conversion of my scribbles into English text keeps me more than happy and content. And, by the signs of it I am hopeful Lenovo will be developing the application to add more features to it.

I use Smart Office 2.0 for my spreadsheet and word processing needs as I find the bundled office suite, Documents to Go, rather lacking in the features. Besides, I can print directly from Smart Office to my network printers; no need to use Google Cloud or Print Share etc.

The screen delivers a decent reading experience; good enough for me for ebook reading and website browsing though not at the default small website text size. And, yes the screen is bright enough for most purposes.

The Android operating system - the ThinkPad comes with version 3.1 - lacks the rich feature-set offered by the desktop operating systems such as Microsoft Windows and Apple Mac OS. It also lacks the use interface refinements of iOS - Apple's operating system for its iPhone and iPad products. For example, selecting, copying and pasting text, and filling in form fields etc. are operations better handled by iOS. There are lots of input method editors and software available at Android Market to enhance the user experience but, out of the box, Android lacks.

The Lenovo ThinkPad is a robust tablet if a little heavy. It does what I want from it better than any other tablet including the latest iPad. I have issues with the user interface and the stock browser and keep looking for third-party applications to enhance and/or supplement my experience. Still, despite all its shortcomings it suits my needs and offers a far superior note taking experience. I am content.
