This review is from: Toshiba Satellite L755-1J5 15.6 inch Laptop ( Intel Core i3-2350M, 2.30GHz, RAM 4GB, HDD 640GB, Bluetooth, Onkyo Speakers, Windows 7 Home Premium) (Personal Computers)
Problem with purchasing a new laptop these days is deciding which one to go for; such a wide choice of brands and models. Went with the Toshiba as I have an old Portégé at work, that's so far survived 3 years in a fairly dusty computer unfriendly environment. Although on the other side of the coin, a number of colleagues have recently received newer Tecra models which have not fared so well. This did make me wonder momentarily if the brand really is the right choice, considering I bought this machine for my offspring, as their Dell Inspiron has just about expired after 5 years of teenage use.

Like with another reviewer, ours was supplied from an alternative internet retailer who offers a standard two year guarantee. Thankfully they have been offering a decent discount of late, as strangely this retailer normally prices the L755-1J5 (and identical bar case colour -1LL) model more than the manufacturers RRP, unlike Amazon who quote the correct RRP and usually ask just below that.

The computer itself looks better than in the images shown on this or other sites and seems reasonably robust for having a modern all plastic case. There's a little flex in the frame around the screen but not excessive and the image once the screen is set to the right angle to view, without reflected light interference, is crystal clear and sharp. Have read that some reviewers were unhappy with the Onkyo speaker and web cam quality but the offspring who's into music, facebook etc. appears more than happy and I would tend to agree on the sound front despite their taste in music. Most processes and commands are also carried out fairly quickly with little if no time spent waiting for the machine to go through the motions; worth paying that bit more for a second generation Core i3 processor over say a Pentium. Oh I particularly like the keyboard and the actions of the keys themselves and the track pad works very well, even with the protective transit sheet still in place.

Points to note and possibly consider if your looking at a Toshiba; there quite a section of the hard drive portioned off somewhere, I assume for the backup restore, and there's no additional software disc like with the Dell. From recollection, when we started it up for the first time it was showing 516GB of storage capacity with 482 freely available before adding anything else and that's from a 640GB drive. Also as another reviewer pointed out the L755-1J5 has a standard 6GB of RAM not 4 as stated by Amazon and yes it's full of this 'bloatware' which again is not helping the drive capacity, although the user of the machine appears to be making use of some of it.

Would I recommend it; on experience so far yes, particularly if you can get a decent discount.

4.0 out of 5 stars How to resolve the battery not charging issue, 12 April 2012

When I bought this, I found there to be a problem with the battery not charging and the windows icon showing that 0% of the battery capacity was available. The laptop would switch off if the charger lead was removed. I initially exchanged the laptop at the store I bought it for because of this problem, but then the second laptop also had the same issue so I decided to try and find a solution before going to the store for the second time in two days to return an item.

I resolved this problem by shutting down the laptop, removing the charger lead and the laptop's battery from the base. I then held down the power button above the keypad for 30 seconds before putting the battery and charger lead back into the laptop.

This fixed the problem and the battery was 100% charged within 2 hours.

Amazon Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Toshiba Satellite L755-1J5 15.6 inch Laptop ( Intel Core i3-2350M, 2.30GHz, RAM 4GB, HDD 640GB, Bluetooth, Onkyo Speakers, Windows 7 Home Premium) (Personal Computers)
On receiving the box my first impression was that it was very light in weight, suggesting that the contents might be somewhat flimsy. Only when the Toshiba Laptop was unpacked did the size/weight ratio provide a little more confidence that the build quality was OK. It is however of a different breed from my old Dell Laptop (2003 vintage), which is built like a tank.

The Toshiba is nicely put together, with the Dark Silver Matrix pattern of the casing providing a very attractive finish. Numerous strips of transparent protective film cover the fascia panel, screen edges and hinges and keyboard. When these are removed the Laptop shines pristine technology at you, but also pristine plastic. Plastic is very much today's material and is not necessarily as delicate as it seems, and this Toshiba is not devalued by it.

I auditioned several laptops locally and the keyboard on most of them seemed to flex when typed upon. The Toshiba keyboard has a more solid feel to it and is responsive, at least for my touch. I am a semi-touch-typist (you can interpret this as `rusty'), having learnt this at school years ago on blank keyboard typewriters.

For those who have complained that the touchpad can be a nuisance when typing, disturbing the cursor if accidentally touched, this Laptop (model L755-1JS) has a convenient button at the front of the keyboard whereby the touchpad can easily be disabled when using a mouse. Using the Fn+F9 keys will do the same. I rarely use the touchpad, finding it aggravating, but this one is OK. There has been no problem with the battery not charging as others have mentioned.

The Intel Core i3-2350M processor with a clock speed of 2.3 GHz is fast and 6 GB Ram (yes, 6GB and not 4GB as stated) is a plus. Word Processing and Photo work is all that I need; I am not a gamer. The Hard Disk seems to be partitioned, giving both C Drive and D Drive of about equal size, although 640GB is far more than I will ever need so I am not concerned. The Toshiba is quiet in operation, about as quiet as my iMac desktop.

The screen is glass/shiny, just like my iMac, and it gives a similar detailed image. Colour and contrast are good. Just locate it in a position to avoid reflections. This has never bothered me with the Mac.

Setup did not overtax my abilities. The Toshiba did the job for me, just requiring some decisions on my part. When setup was complete, I uninstalled the McAfee 30 day trial without activating it using the Add/Remove Programmes facility and replaced it with Norton 360 v6. Although this seems to be the current wisdom, every anti-virus/protection programme that I considered had negative and positive reviews and one can become confused and neurotic about it. Making back-up discs is my next step, as I am constantly reminded by the Toshiba Recovery programme.

The Toshiba hugs the tabletop with its rubber feet and is very stable in use, belying its lightness in weight. I have never used a laptop on my lap; it contributes to poor posture and can result in overheating unless a support platform is used. As it says on the box, it is a portable computer; the word `laptop' is not used. For its price, it is a good choice and with the promotional reductions for Office 2010 and Norton 360 applied, it is one of the best deals in town.

UPDATE:
I have now made back-up DVD's (4 are required) to restore the system in case of a crash using the 'Toshiba System Recovery Media' facility. I held my breath during the procedure as one reviewer maintained that he couldn't get past making the 1st. DVD, but it all worked flawlessly for me. Also I find the Toshiba Disc Burning software does everything that I need. I note that the Norton 630 v6 also has a back-up and disc burning facility. I have never been impressed with the Nero disc burning software and have always preferred Roxio, using Toast Titanium software on the Mac. Using the earlier Microsoft Office for Mac version of Microsoft Word, I find the new version supplied with Office, Home and Student 2010 somewhat different. Word documents saved in the new version are not compatible with earlier versions, although it will read earlier versions and ask you if you want to convert to the new version. It is possible however to 'save as' in earlier versions of word. They are then readable on my Mac.
