I received the RF511 this morning and I have to say that Amazon's service has been brilliant in that they dispatched this via next day after my initial RF511 order went walkies in the West Midlands, courtesy of CityLink.

First impressions on this laptop are mixed. To start with the good: the i5/8GB/1TB spec is reasonably fast, it's handled everything I've thrown at it without a hiccup thus far. This includes 1080p HD, processing RAW files in LightRoom and, even though I didn't buy this laptop for gaming, The Sims 3 - which the HD3000 integrated graphics did a decent job with on high settings.

On that note however, the fan does like to spin-up a bit in LightRoom and when I took The Sims 3 for a spin, things got hot, 80*C hot. Otherwise, the RF511 stays quiet and cool. I've generally noticed it hovering around 30-40*C in SpeedFan on general internet/music/Microsoft Word use.

What I will say is that Samsung's "superior LCD screen" is anything but. It has a washed out appearance and oddly the image deteriorates left-to-right, top-to-bottom whilst sitting straight on, despite good viewing angles. The slightest shift will make one part of the picture hazy under the backlight whilst giving deeper colours to another part. Very odd.

Coupled with this, the RF511 sucumbs to the stereotype of lapptops having poor speakers whilst my previous Lenovo E520 packed speakers which sounded 'full-bodied'. Why can't a £600 Samsung laptop do the same?

With the aforementioned in mind, the RF511 is a bit so-so for those situations where you end up watching a movie with your mates around a laptop. In terms of the screen, I have found Intel's gamma adjustment slider goes a short way to fixing things; I suggest putting it down to 0.9 to make things a little less washed. The speakers however will always sound naff.

In terms of pre-installed software the RF511 comes with a lot of it, so much so that you can get a decent amount of scroll on the add/remove programs. Thankfully most of it is either Samsung/third-party drivers or Samsung software, but there are a few things like "WildTangent Games", "WordCapture X Pro", "Norton Online Backup" and a suite of CyberLink software which you might want to remove. Norton's security software is especially annoying (I'd suggest Microsoft's Security Essentials, it's free).

The build quality feels decent enough, however the lid does flex if you lift it from a corner however - and whilst the typing experience is good, the noise of the keys varies around the large ENTER key. But things feel pretty solid otherwise and I haven't heard any creeks from the chasis yet (that being said I haven't exactly stress tested it, nor do I want to :P).

Lastly, in terms of design I have read criticism which I think is down to the colour scheme - I'll admit the oddly grey/silver scheme keyboard is at odds with the black super-gloss lid (note: fingerprint and scratch magnet) - and - further, the chrome hinges look kinda tacky, but the RF511 is nothing bad to look at in my opinion.

On the whole, the RF511 is good, but it's not anything I'd recommend when priced too far over the £500 price mark, which it is. Less than this and coupled with Samsung's VAT back, it makes for a great deal, but otherwise I'd recommend a Samsung series 6, 7 or 9, or perhaps the Dell Inspiron or XPS 14z.

Bought this Laptop for the good i5 processor speed, massive 8Gb RAM, and storage capacity (1 TB HDD).

Laptop feels sturdy but light weight with a great keyboard and touch pad. Battery life is good and is definately an upgrade from my old Toshiba laptop.

The spec on the Amazon website is exact except for under the product description, which appears to be copied from the Samusung website and lists there is a Nvidia GeForce 540M dedicated graphics card. This is not the case for this model number (NP-RF511-A01UK). Graphics is handled by the onboard Intel HD Graphics 3000. But this is still more than enough for playing DVD's and doing eveyday computer use without slowing the computer down. If you want to play high end games you might need to look elsewhere.

Overall this is a great laptop and would recommend it to others.

Samsung RF511 15.6 inch Laptop is one computer which I can honestly say that I do not have one bad thing to say about. It was so easy to set up, in fact it was just me turning it on and it did everything itself just asking me a few questions along the way, I was able to use the actual internet within minutes and the other programs which are already installed within the computer which I was very happily surprised with and it was a very unexpected bonus.
I mainly bought this computer for two particular reasons the first one mainly being processor speed which I have to say I am not disappointed in anyway as everything works sufficiently and quickly. The second reason was storage and I was once again not disappointed, where this is different from my last computer the manufacturer has divided the memory into local disk 'C' and local disk 'D' they actually ask what your preference for the memory divisions. Why I like the two divisions is that I can save particular items to each side which will keep my files into an order and also when there is so many files it will be more convenient for myself. For those that are interested local disk 'C' is 363 GB and local disk 'D' is 544 GB. The full memory capacity is 907GB though advertised as 1TB I do believe that the programs which are added by the makers take up the 93 GB. I love the actual screen as the clarity of the screen is impressive and the colours are so vivid because of the HD which makes gaming for me so much better. The sound quality is really good especially when I am watching any films onscreen; one thing I particularly liked is that I can adjust the volume by simply pressing one of three small buttons at the top right hand corner of the keyboard section.
What surprised me was the amount of bloat ware, there was quite a small amount compared to other computers which I have seen, the only things which I have noticed which are included but not really needed are Samsung Movies and emusic, the others I feel personally would be useful to my needs regarding my use of this computer.
The actual laptop outer case is well made, the buttons are very well spaced out and very comfortable to use. The space bar is just less than three and a half inches in length which for me is perfect. The total breadth of the computer is fifteen inches and is not overly heavy or bulky. It is really nice too look at and very professional looking. The one thing which I really love which is just a minor thing is having the numbers in the side of the computer, and if you hit the number lock on or off this shows on the screen immediately therefore no mistakes are made. The actual shift key is a lot smaller than my last computer which is a plus for me as when using my last computer I was forever hitting it, the 'cap lock' key is just above the shift key, roughly an inch in breadth which makes it more convenient when I am typing.
The speed for the internet to come on from total shutdown is also a matter of seconds which I just love as with my last computer I could nearly go and boil a kettle from cold to boiling and make a pot of tea before I was able to get on the internet so with this computer I am really spoiled and so happy with it. Along with the speed of this computer turning on from shutdown, is really fast and if you just put down your screen, when you lift your screen up the computer screen automatically comes back to life and within two seconds the computer comes back to life.
I am not technological minded so this review is just a few points why I love my new computer, therefore if you want techno points you will have to go elsewhere but for me this computer has everything I need and a whole lot more.
If I could give the Samsung RF511 ten stars I would do so as it is money well spent and I recommend this computer to everyone who wants speed, efficiency and power within a computer. The customer service I received from Amazon was second to none as always, I purchased my computer on the Sunday evening and it was delivered to my front door on Wednesday lunch time. I actually did a lot of research before choosing this computer and the Samsung RF511 has everything I wanted included in a computer, and I can honestly say I am extremely happy with my purchase.
