This review is from: Lenovo G770 17.3 inch Laptop - Black (Intel Core i5 2450M 2.5GHz, 8GB RAM, 500GB HDD, DVDRW, LAN, WLAN, Webcam, Windows 7 Home Premium 64-Bit) (Personal Computers)
I've had a lot of experience with computers and I've tested and used many different types.
I'm a 19 year old student, music producer and a DJ, but I also do graphic design,so I needed something that had enough memory to cope with all the programs I needed. Seeing this had a very generous 8GB of ram, and an Intel i5, I immediately bought this brilliant computer because of its low price.

Unfortunately, the first laptop I received was faulty. It wouldn't even start, all I got was error messages about windows not being installed. Amazon was good help and sent me a new one, and i gave the faulty one back. Sure, it was pretty annoying to experience this, but at least this one is working fine.

GENERAL:

Anyways, here's the important stuff. The Lenovo g770 has an 17.3 inch screen so it's obviously not the most portable laptop, but it's far from being TOO big. Its design is nice, and its keyboard is comfortable to use. For the styling and looks it's actually pretty nice, it has a brushed metal feel, which seems black, but under some lighting you see it's actually dark wooden brown. But I didn't buy this for the looks anyways, so lets talk about the performance. It starts up fast, shuts down fast. I can run photoshop, after effects, and when I make music I can use many, many virtual instruments (VSTs for those who are familiar with computer music) unlike my older PC. So it's fast, and its great memory and i5 core deal with all the programs I had to use. Its 500GB hard drive is decent enough for a laptop, but external drives aren't too expensive these days so there's always a solution in case you have a huge library of documents, movies or music. For the computer itself, it's a print magnet and gathers dust easily. It's not a huge problem but it is a bit nagging. For the battery life, it comes with a battery management program. It works fine, and it's nice that you can use different settings according to what you want. With energy saving mode activated, I can get around 5 hours of life while using various programs. It can also block the maximum charge of the battery to 50% if, like me, you plug the laptop most of the time. This means the battery won't use up by being charged 100% all the time. So this is a plus. It has a few USB ports; 4 total which is great for me, and one of them is even USB 3.0, which again, is great. The trackpad is a bit annoying sometimes but you get used to it with time. I'm now using a mouse so if you hate the trackpad there's always a quick solution. The computer is quiet too, and only heats up when I play games. Speaking of...

GAMING:

I was attracted to the 2GB graphics card on this. This said, that model of card is NOT the best. It's good, and can run most modern games on low to medium settings, but don't expect to be playing any high level gaming on this. But this isn't a gaming laptop anyways, and for its price, it's fine for any casual gamer like me. I've played company of heroes on high settings, sims 3 on medium and skyrim on low, and all three play fine with these settings. The resolution of the screen could be better yes, but it does have an HDMI output in case you need a better screen. As for the sound, the speakers are pretty good too. Sure they're laptop speakers so don't expect any bass, but they have a clear good sound.

VERDICT:

Even with the problems i had at first, everything works fine and as I wanted. For it's price, it's more than a great laptop. Great specs with only a few minor faults makes this a powerful all-rounder computer, perfect for work, movie watching, or casual gaming. Of course, it's not the best laptop in the world, but for that price it's impossible for it to be. So if you need something for hardcore gaming and have the money, or want the best, highly detailed HD screen, then you better look for something more expensive. For all those who just need a good laptop they can use for various tasks without any problems, this is perfect. I would have given this a 5 star if it had a bit of a better screen and graphics card, and less horrendous (okay it's not that bad but still very annoying) bloatware that's tiring to remove.

PROS:

+ The great 8GB memory, the i5, for a low price
+ Good sound for a laptop, nice design, and again it is FAST!
+ Plenty of compatibility, with USB 3.0, an SD card input, an HDMI output..

CONS:

- Fingerprints and dust accumulates very fast
- The screen resolution could be better
- Comes with the apparently obligatory new-laptop-bloatware

I hope this was useful, and if you're hesitating to buy this, I really recommend you do, not at all disappointed and worth every penny :)

I bought this Lenovo G770 laptop (Intel Core i5 2450M 2.5GHz, 8GB RAM, 500GB HDD) for my uni work. My older HP 17' laptop has become very noisy and it'll go for someone as a gift after its fan will be replaced. But going back to the topic... the lenovo laptop is just great; before I bought it I had watched its review on youtube ([...]) and I was a bit worried about the quality of keyboard and its screen. Not necessarily! The keyboard is really nice (even the touchpad isn't as annoying as others described) and easy to clean (better than in my previous HP), the quality of image is not bad, even though it's true about the angles (you need to seat in front of the laptop to enjoy the best quality); what else... the laptop is amazingly quiet (or maybe it's just me having got used to my old HP driller :)
I don't have time at the moment to fully enjoy this laptop and play with all its features, but for the price (£579)... I probably wouldn't get anything better. It's solid, fast, elegant, large screen... much better than £50 cheaper Samsung 17.3' or other HP 17.3' laptops I had been looking at!
Enjoy!
J.

4.0 out of 5 stars Amazing Laptop, but few minor hitches., 8 Jun 2012

This review is from: Lenovo G770 17.3 inch Laptop - Black (Intel Core i7 2620M 2.7GHz, 8GB RAM, 750GB HDD, Blu-ray combo, LAN, WLAN, BT, Webcam, Windows 7 Home Premium 64-Bit) (Personal Computers)
This laptop is great and serves multiple purposes such as gaming and work very nicely, the graphical display is outstanding and the wide screen clearly visualizes everything you want to see, there is no stretching or black parts no matter what your viewing. It's very fast and everything is quick to do and easy, the mouse pad provides the perfect balance of sensitivity and grip, allowing using your hands to control the cursor far more easily than previous laptops I have had. The booting is very fast indeed and it seems it speeds up everytime I switch it on or off. The keyboard is very nice and easy to use, the buttons are nicely spaced so their is no habit of tapping the wrong key by mistake which ive found a common annoyance in other laptops. This laptop also have quite a nice battery time, dependant on the brightness setting and other features, if your brightness is really high, it wont be aslong, but with a reasonabe brightness, it can runs with no charger for quite awhile.

Now for the negative side, which is minor but still worth mentioning, the laptop states that it has the ability to play both DVD and BLU Ray discs, however, I have problems with the latter. It comes with a POWERDVD software by lenovo which should let you view both normals dvds and blu ray discs, but the blu ray discs do not seems to work for me, bare that in mind if you want this laptop over another purely for the blu ray experience, then I would think twice. Another small problem I have is the length of the charger, I find it considerably short compared to other laptop chargers I have had, which is slightly inconvenient in some situations, but is more of an observation than real problem.

Overall, great multipurpose laptop, and I would highly recommend to anyone thinking about purchasing it, my rating would probably be 4.5/5 stars.
