The machine its self is very powerful, however the product description is rather vague, so I will try and clarify a few things.

Intel Core i7 2630QM 2.0GHz
A brilliant processor, very fast and capable of multitasking easily without any noticeable slowdown.

6GB DDR3 RAM
A lot of RAM, very useful.

ATI Radeon HD6490M 1GB GDDR5 graphics card (as well as an integrated Intel HD graphics system)
The main graphics card is very good. So far I have not found a game that suffers from low frame-rate on maximum settings.
The integrated Intel graphics are also surprisingly powerful. Switching between the two is a simple click of a button, however it doesn't tell you this beforehand.

Because of that, I spent a long time playing a video game on a low framerate before realising that it was running on integrated graphics. Upon saying that, however, the framerate was about 11 per second when playing a modern video game on max settings, which is impressive for an integrated chipset.

750GB 5200RPM HDD
The hard drive has plenty of space and a tolerable rotation speed. This is pretty average as far as laptops go.

Build quality is very good. The laptop is very well made, is sleek and stylish, and has a tough, sturdy metal exterior. My only complaint is the lack of back-lighting on the keyboard. This makes typing in the dark almost impossible. The display is excellent, and brightness is easily adjustable manually. The laptop does get very hot when playing video or video games, and perhaps an external cooling fan would be a wise purchase.

BEWARE. Update this laptop thoroughly before using it. It makes use of Windows updates, but also separate HP updates (WHICH ARE ALSO VITAL and hard to find.) Be sure to install every update or you may find the laptop behaving infuriatingly strange.

Overall this laptop is very powerful for the price, and the build quality is very good. It can play the average modern video game on high settings (however I have not tested on examples such as Crysis) It can easily breeze through multitasking and very rarely crashes. Aside from the initial setup and hard-to-find updates, this laptop is easy to use and very good at its job.

For this price, it is simply brilliant.

EDIT:

Switchable graphics works by right clicking the desktop.
Touchpad is easy to use, but multi-touch gestures are a pain in the rear, to the point where they may as well just not be there.

I was waiting for this laptop for quite a while and when I got it I was very impressed! Sandy Bridge was definitely worth the wait. My old laptop was Windows Vista and was more or less kaput so the performance is awesome. I have to say Windows 7 is a big improvement for me. Everything is that much tidier, neater and quicker. The 750GB hard disk is excellent. Anything I have loaded up has been relatively quick. There is no Blu-Ray drive and the display is 720p. It is more than enough for everyday use (you tube and any video is pretty good). I think a higher resolution of 1080p would make looking at text pretty tough. The Finger print reader saves a lot of effort from the keys although it usually takes me a few swipes to log in. The click pad and keyboard is excellent. I have a mouse but can use the click pad all day without any complaint. Beats Audio is one of best plus points on this laptop. Music is that much better when it's turned on. The speakers on the machine are very impressive. USB 3.0 is another nice addition. Speeds are noticeable quicker.

A backlit keyboard is something HP should have definitely included. Maybe a Blu-Ray reader and 1080p should have been included as well but I wouldn't rate the machine anything less without them.

All in the laptop is excellent. The only thing that I can complain is the metal finish around the laptop. It doesn't sit flush on the laptop between the touch pad and the edge of the machine. It bulges out when I press it with my finger. It's not very noticeable but it doesn't sit seamless like it does around the rest of the machine.

HP Pavilion DV6-6054 15.6 inch Notebook (Intel Core i7-2630QM Processor, 2 GHz, 6GB RAM, 1TB HDD, Windows 7 Home Premium) - AluminiumMasses of memory (I bought the 1 TB version) and a quick processor. The 'get started' leaflet shows the hard drive as a separate item but it's built in.
Includes a full sized key pad which is sealed so that crumbs and dust can't get underneath and includes a number keypad. I haven't tried any blue ray disks yet but the picture quality for viewing pictures and dvds is very good as is the sound quality when playing dvds and cds.
There is a starter version of Microsoft Office 2010 (word and excel only) and an option to buy on-line any of the various full versions.
There's a light at the side which comes on when the mains lead (which is slightly more than 10 feet long) is plugged in and charging, but it's a bit small.
Comes with free 60 days of Norton Internet Security which I shall replace upon its expiry with one of the free systems.
Windows live mail is included (I had to get my son's help setting it up so that I can receive my emails on the laptop as well as on my old desktop computer where I use Office outlook).
