Product Overview

See how your favourite movies and games come alive on a sophisticated VAIO Display Premium screen. Scenes are ultra bright with the highest levels of colour and contrast for amazing realism. The real-wide 16:9 format gives reduced black bars so you can see more of the action, wherever you are sitting. Dont think VAIO F Series is all power and no economy. These notebooks are remarkably efficient with an ambient light sensor that adjusts screen brightness in lighter areas to conserve energy. Press the Displa...

This review is from: Sony VAIO F11S1E 16.4 inch notebook (Core i7-720QM 1.6GHz, 6Gb, 500Gb, Blu-ray, BT, Webcam, Win 7 Home Premium 64 bit (Black)) (Electronics)
Having bought this laptop as a replacement for my Sony Vaio VGN-AR31M I was left feeling somewhat disappointed to begin with. The main cause for this was the fan noise. My previous Vaio is almost silent in comparison. Admittedly the Intel Core i7 processors do run hotter than core 2 duos, but I would have thought Sony would have given some customisation of the fan settings. However, I did get used to the noise after a while - except when CPU intensive applications are running, then it's just horrible.

On the plus side the F11S1E is laid out pretty well. There are 3 USB ports, 2 on the right side near the front and 1 on the left hand side combined with the eSATA port. The port on the left is very useful if you use this laptop with a USB mouse as devices plugged into the right hand side ports can sometimes get in the way. The keyboard's keys seem robust and are individually framed. The keyboard also has its own separate numeric pad.

The 1920 x 1080 screen resolution, in my opinion, is great. It's perfect for image editing. A potential downside to the screen is the matt finish. A glossy display seems to make the display just that bit crisper than the matt ones. The display has an automatic brightness adjustment feature (sensor next to the Numlock indicator) which is okay, but can be easily disabled if needed. There is also a button to switch off the display's backlight in order to save power when not in use.

Within a day of getting my hands on the laptop I had formatted the HDD, repartitioned it and put Windows 7 Pro 64 on there. I can't stand it when companies pre-load 3rd Party software :-). All of the drivers and updates were easily accessible from the Sony Vaio site.

The 500GB HDD should provide ample storage for most users. This was the lowest rated system component at 5.9 when using the Windows Experience Index. Full results below.

If you are using Windows Vista then you will probably be very pleased with Windows 7. It's just so much better than its predecessor!!

To summarise, in my opinion the Sony Vaio VPCF11S1E is not a bad laptop overall, but a bit on the pricey side... and a bit noisy ;-)

Pros
Keyboard keys - Robust and individually framed
Screen - Resolution of 1920 x 1080 perfect for image editing (not a glossy screen though)
All drivers easily downloadable from the Sony Vaio site - Perfect if, like me, you format it straight away
1 programmable soft button (2 other buttons that could probably be programmed with know-how)

Cons
Fan noise - I have got used to this now, except when running CPU intensive applications
Only single HDD bay, i.e. no option to add an SSD for the OS to run on

Windows Experience Index
The Windows Experience Index assesses key system components on a scale of 1.0 to 7.9
Base score - Determined by lowest subscore: 5.9
Processor - Calculations per second: 7.0
Memory (RAM) - Memory operations per second: 7.4
Graphics - Desktop performance for Windows Aero: 6.5
Gaming graphics - 3D business and gaming graphics performance: 6.5
Primary hard disk - Disk data transfer rate: 5.9
