4.0 out of 5 stars An iPad would be superior., 24 Aug 2012

This is physically similar to an iPad 2. Battery life is excellent though probably slightly less. It doesn't have the Google Play access but that can be overcome (it's not clear if the solution allows paying for apps). There are some advantages over the iPad such as the open platform, ease of access, USB ports, SD card slot, rooted out of the box, smaller MB size of applications due to Java rather than Objective C, and of course the lower cost. There are major weaknesses in comparison to the iPad, it doesn't have bluetooth, it doesn't have GPS, it probably doesn't have a magnetometer, touch sensitivity is lower and has much more latency with regard to musical instrument software, WiFi may have lower reception (or at least indicates that perhaps in error), the processor is single core and appears to be over-clocked to 1.2Ghz, doesn't seem to have an ambient light sensor. You get what you pay for an it is worth the money but there are reductions in quality and workmanship. Mine had a speck of dust under the glass (which isn't visible when in use) it also has a minor stuck pixel (just one and also not particularly visible). These flaws fall within Apples spec for quality, but are unlikely to be found on an iPad.

It is deeply superior to the Amazon Kindle. Amazon failed to allow American software to be sold in the UK store. This is only £20 or so more but is 100 times better, but it is also too big and too heavy. You can view PDF files extremely well with this product but you need Adobe Acrobat which you can download directly from their site. Most of the apps available are garbage but there are a number of killer applications out there. The free Wiki Encyclopedia Offline (a 3.58GB download), FFmpeg untested as yet, and the paid for TapeMachine which is a wave editor and can be purchased directly from their website, are excellent applications suggesting perhaps that you should go for the 16GB tablet instead to get more storage (as applications don't like to be on external SD cards).

Android is not a good platform and iOS is better. This cannot be upgraded to 4.0.4 as may be implied by the Yarvik website. In 4.0.3 the Google Text To Speech engine is generally broken and doesn't work, so it seems unlikely that you will have TTS if you buy this (Amazon Kindle works for speech, as does iPad). There are no useful 3D Modelling apps. There are no render engines. It's difficult to print directly from Android to a printer. There isn't much truly free software. You cannot create Video DVDs or ISO image files. Touch screens get very dirty everyday so you will need a cleaning solution of some kind. Much of the software is still designed for the smaller screens of mobile phones. Many applications have a reliance on Recently Added lists and those can create 6 or seven duplicate references to every file to torment the OS (the solution being to unmount the SD card then remount using the settings).

It's not clear what the components or chips are in use but the sound quality of this device appears to be excellent. Perhaps it's using a Wolfram DAC? Ogg 5 sounds particularly sweet and the quality appears to out perform a cheap CD Player playing the disk directly. There are some programming languages available as well as some compilers. Android is programmed in their version of Java, and Google won their case against Oracle. Java is much easier than Objective C needed for iOS but has the limitation of running on a VM. The upside is that the applications are probably smaller in size. It is possible to do WiFi sharing via AirPort on a Mac Pro and the settings are made in the 'Sharing' preference not Network. The hardware here is interesting. The Mali 400 graphics chip is outstanding and the standard for ARM. Be aware that like the iPad it only has a single mono speaker output (probably two of them) where as the Kindle is stereo. Also be aware that there is no audio input and that even providing one is difficult because the software would also have to use that.

In conclusion, this is probably the best 'cheap' Android tablet on the market today. Touch screens have two basic flaws though, they have to use big buttons for touching and the ergonomics suck (holding a tablet in one hand to touch it with the other is no good). You'll need a stand, you'll need a case, you'll need a screen cleaner, you'll need an SD card etc, etc. 7 inch would have better ergonomics but the screen will be too small for PDF files. The tablet can be held comfortably in the hands producing eyestrain as you're then looking down, or can be held at eye height producing a tiring of the arms (choose). Although connectivity is good here the standardised size and shape of the iPad gives that platform more options particularly with respect to audio connectivity. It's unfortunate that Apple is a closed platform (due to iTunes) and it's unfortunate that Apple is making stupid decisions again (sandboxing, handicapped software, developer fees, 30% commission etc) and Microsoft being dumb enough to follow them, and we see that the winner in the long term will be Linux. Android is a Linux platform. Linux is an open system. There's no Java on iOS. The superiority of CentOS/Red Hat over Mac OS X must be a real embarrassment to Apple (gee sure hope that no one notices). Android has a place but currently that's a second place, the poor cousin of the iPad. Google of course, is an advertising company, that sells advertising and advertising platforms (like Android). Serious consideration should be given to purchase the iPad if you can afford it. That would be a liability (like a Rolex). Yarvik - use it, loose it, break it, buy another, and another. It's practical, it's not a fashion model, but hey it's still looking good.

4.0 out of 5 stars No Google play out of the box!, 15 Jun 2012

This tablet would be so much better if it had the Google play store installed as standard. But apparently it's not totally Google certified!
It's easy to find a fix to this online.. takes about 5-10 minutes to get the play store on the tablet. But there will be plenty of people who don't know about this.

Once the play store is installed you can download all the good stuff.

It does seem a little sluggish at times, but that's probably because i'm used to using an HTC One X phone. It's not that bad, but if you try swapping between apps to quickly it needs some time to catch up.
The screen is really nice and bright, plus it's responsive. Also it's a capacitive touch screen, which is great.

I got this for my mum to use and she loves it. She's got a few games on it, peggle, cut the rope, wordsearch etc. And she can message friends easily. Plus she finds it better to use than a touchpad on a laptop.

Overall i'd say it's decent for the price, i actually got it cheaper from somewhere else ;-)
It's just a shame that it comes with the getjar app store... which is pretty rubbish really!

If you are thinking of getting one take a look on google (other search engines are available) for the way to get the play store on the tablet. This way you'll get the most out of it.

The scrolling is very jumpy, slow, the modem range is poor and the getjar apps don't download.

Not impressed in the slightest.
