I should start by saying I do not like Samsung products normally, and definitely would not buy a Samsung Galaxy S2/S3/S4 phone... which is why i hesitated a few times before buying this 8.9 Tablet, but I'm really pleased that I did. I was originally going to get the Google Nexus 7...which has a faster processor and faster operating system, but in all other respects, this machine excels. The 7" tablet was for me a little too small - with the keyboard I barely saw half the screen when typing an email - but with the 8.9" screen on the Samsung it feels just right. Very light, pretty well put together and teh screen is pin sharp and really bright.

Battery Life - Very good
Screen - Excellent
Operating System - It's only on Android 3.2 - which is a little sluggish. You can upgrade to Ice Cream Sandwich or Jelly Bean, but annoyingly, not directly from Samsung...why not? Come on Samsung, get with the programme! So I will do this and I expect it will be more fluid - though it is already pretty nice and smooth.
Processor - yes it could be faster, but considering I only paid £250 for the 3G version, I am more than happy.

Gripes - The only gripes I have are that I cannot charge it with any old USB socket (like the one I have in the car, and for my HTC phone) you must charge it with the Samsung Charger. I am hoping that when I wipe the Samsung software and replace with standard Android, that this little quibble will be solved. Also - there is no SD card slot... though I think you can buy an adapter to plug into the power socket - a good workaround for getting stuff into / out of the tablet on the move, but not the same as an SD slot.

Very happy all in all - and most of all I will say it again... why are all tablets not 8 or 9 inches?...seems ideal to me.

3.0 out of 5 stars A poor iPad rival, 8 April 2012

I've had the SGT 8.9" since January.

Price
Comparable in price to an iPad, but when the two devices are compared side by side, this looks poor value for money.

Size/Form
This is where the device excels in my view. Possibly the ideal size for a tablet; light and small enough to be held in one hand comfortably.

Camera
The rear camera is only 2MP but how often would you want to use it? The front camera is fine for Skype etc.

Battery Life
Excellent

Performance/Speed
Diabolically bad with Android v3. Screen transitions are slow and laggy, and video performance is poor. Not at all what I expected given the chip is made by a world leader in video technology. Live wallpapers slow the device down even more. Another point on speed is the time taken to charge - very slow. Whether Android v4 will bring improvements is yet to be seen.

Software
The Android v3 OS seems prone to crashes. V4 (Ice Cream Sandwich) has been out for a while but at the time of writing Samsung still haven't released the modified OS for this device. ICS promises some desperately needed improvements and stability, so the wait is irritating. Many websites seem to default to the mobile version despite the 1280x800 resolution using the stock browser.

Flash Support
Much is made of this, but few websites seem to use it now. Despite having the latest version of Flash, a few sites refuse to work insisting that it isn't installed.

Expansion Options
No microSD slot to boost memory is both a shame and a missed opportunity to give the tablet an edge.

Video Playback
Together with reading, the prime reason I bought this was to watch HD video on a bigger screen than my phone without having to use a laptop or re-encoding to another format. Avi files are played without problem, but mkv's are not recognised by the default player, and most third party players give poor, laggy playback for 720p video. Persistence works though, and some do seem to give better results than others. Ought not to have been as big an issue as it is though.

Overall
I have an iPhone, and I quickly noticed that many iPhone apps work with iPad and thus only have to be bought once. An Android phone owner will presumably find the same issue with an Android tablet, but for me I found it had the potential to get quite expensive. The delay in Samsung rolling out ICS shows perhaps a lack of support of released devices in favour of development of newer devices. This was the reason I ditched Nokia in favour of Apple phones, and if true is I think a poor strategy from Samsung. The poor video performance lets this tablet down very badly. With what I know now, I would have gone for the iPad 2 instead. The arrival of the new iPad makes this even more of a no-brainer.
