Bought this a year ago - main purpose was to have a small machine to go online, write texts etc from my sofa without the need to ramp up my desktop computer which is stationed in my bedroom where it is often quite cold during winter.

Being not a huge fan of smart phones and finding grown-up laptops quite cumbersome I thought a netbook may be a good choice for me. Purchased the Acer A1 D257 for little more than GBP 200 at a local retailer. Looks very pretty in its bordeaux red colour and it's very handy-sized.

Sure the small size comes with a trade-off and that is performance. With the basic memory of 1GB my A1 would frequently take "creative breaks" of 10-30 seconds without obvious reasons during which it was completely unusable. This resulted in me not using the machine any more a few weeks after the excitement had worn off.

Half a year later I gave it a 2nd chance and purchased a 2GB memory bar. Thanks to video instructions I found on youtube I managed to install it properly and the A1 works significantly better now. The new memory was quite cheap (10 quid) therefore I cannot understand why Acer would not equip their netbook with 2GB memory in the first place. It's like selling a Ford Mondeo with the engine from a Fiat Panda.

Another point of critics is the battery lifetime - the promised 8 hours turned out to be more like 5. What actually upsets me is that after a year the capacity is down to 2 hours (after estimated 50-60 recharging cycles)!

All in all it is a useful product with downsides that throw it into the realms of mediocracy. Be aware that when you open your A1 to upgrade the poor hardware you will most likely forfeit your warranty with the manufacturer!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Machine, slowed down by Asus Software, 26 July 2012

Brought this netbook a few days a go, upon booting the machine up I can see why some have complained about the speed. Anyway I was prepared and I know my way around computers so a memory upgrade from 1GB > 2 GB (Costing around £10) gives this machine a boost, but probably the most important thing is to remove all of the junk it comes loaded with

Honestly I spent about an hour removing pre loaded software which is the only reason I did not give this product 5 stars. Once you have removed all of the garbage and cut down the list of programs that run at start up the machine has no speed issues at all. Multi tasking and watching video etc no problem!

Have not had any issues with Wifi connection though, even works in the garden doing skype video calls so I'm not sure why other people have had problems with it?

4.0 out of 5 stars All in all a good netbook!, 24 Jun 2012

This review is from: Acer Aspire One D257 10.1 inch Netbook (Intel Atom N570 Dual-Core Processor, 1GB RAM, 250GB HDD, 8 Hours Battery Life, Bluetooth, Windows 7 Starter & Android) - Burgundy (Personal Computers)
Bottom line this is a decent netbook for the price. Few points to note though! Note that Windows starter edition might not be the fully functional version you are expecting - e.g. limited themes, unable to change wallpaper (although look online for solution!). There is a massive benefit with upgrading the memory to 2GB - but honestly the process to install it is not straight forward, it requires you disassemble the computer - the tabs on the key board (4 of them) are delicate, the rear access door hard to remove - achieved it, but could easily see people damaging the computer while doing this. Android on this computer is a total waste of time - not a fully authorised version of Android, not approved by Google. Consequently the Play Market does not work and you can't download the Apps you'd expect - those that are there are all in Japanese. Also the other reviews about Acer computers being stuffed full of "bulkware" are true and require you to remove various unnecessary programs that use up system resources. However - ignoring all that - Windows 7 works well - works like a small laptop. I'm happy with this decent, tidy looking, small computer!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great netbook - As long as you install a fresh copy of Windows!, 26 May 2012

I'm not going to talk about the hardware too much as most things have been said - it is a nice little unit, especially the keyboard. However, I would like to let everyone know that there is nothing fundamentally wrong with it speed-wise - the dual core processor and 1GB of ram handle Windows 7 really smoothly during light to moderate use. I'm talking iTunes, Skype, some PDFs and 3 or browser tabs open at the same time without any problems. I've even had all of that plus about 7 tabs open without any significant slowdown, just a slight pause when switching between applications. Booting up takes 45 seconds and shutting down about 15.

The secret is to install a fresh copy of Windows! This is because Acer loads their computers up with bloatware which they are paid for, so it keeps the costs down to the end user. Probably the biggest culprit for most people who are complaining about sluggish performance is the pesky McAffee Security trial, but all the other random crap which I can't really remember now can't have helped either. It's a price worth paying because I would install a fresh copy of Windows on any machine anyway, even if it hardly had any bloatware.

For anyone wondering how to do this, as it does not come with a disk, remember that along with the PC you have also obtained a license for Windows 7 Starter, so there is nothing illegal about torrenting the OEM version of Windows 7 Starter and entering the code on the bottom of the computer when asked during installation. In order to actually install it, you need to either use an external DVD drive or flash the .ISO file you have downloaded to some sort of USB media - guides on how to do this are everyone online, just search 'installing Windows 7 from a USB drive'. Then plug in whatever you are using, fire up setup, wipe it clean and reinstall. You will be amazed at the difference.

One last note, some hardware will not work after the reinstall, in fact most won't. You need to go to the Acer website and download the drivers for everything and put them on a USB stick either before wiping it or on a different computer.

Have had this netbook for about a month now and we are delighted with it. We were contemplating buying an iPad but were worried about not having a conventional keyboard so went for this as a half way house. Find the Android system very fast to boot and super for quick checking of emails and the net. Limited apps available but that's not something that bothers us. Windows 7 starter available for other things when necessary. We bought this mainly for travelling to save us carrying our large laptops but to still have something that we could download photos and videos onto as backup, check emails and the odd search of the net but have foud we are using it more and more at home as it's so quick and handy. Battery life is about 6 or 7 hours depending on what you are doing. All in all excellent value for money.

This review is likely to be of prime interest to work/business users but may be of interest to others

This is a great product. I use it for business use. Plenty powerful enough, particularly when used in conjunction with Windows hibernate option. Available plenty fast enough to use in meetings.

Word starter is a great idea. The advertising is hardly annoying (not least as it is only for Microsoft products) but does take up valuable screen space.

I did fit extra memory (2 Mb) into mine, simply buying the £8 unit advertised by Amazon. Though I have built desktop computers, this did feel a somewhat scary process that I would not recommend to anyone for whom it's their first attempt at fiddling with the insides of the machines. The plastic components are tight and you have to put some considerable pressure on them! Once installed, the memory worked absolutely fine.

If you buy this, be prepared to pay the extra £25 or so for a freestanding USB DVD writer to backup your factory settings. (Should you decide not to do this, you can find backup disks on eBay but obviously I don't know if they work or not and you'd still need a DVD writer in any case, costing you more in the long run).

I have needed to buy a DVD writer as I wanted to transfer my Office 2010 Pro license from an old laptop to this notebook. This cannot be done from the activation wizard on Office Starter. I'm going to have to back up to disk, uninstall, hope the Office Pro works and, if by any chance not, reinstall the Office Starter. Microsoft say that it is acceptable to transfer licenses in this way provided the original installation is removed from the obsolete computer but, if in doubt, check with them (and don't hold me responsible)!

On the plus side, it is very easy (at least for an experienced user) to set up a home network. Having said this, Windows Starter only does backups to a DVD drive (which isn't supplied as described above). Quite frankly, if you have to have a network running anyway, automated backups are of limited use and it's easy enough (for an experienced user) to simply copy onto a backup directory on another computer and achieve much the same thing. Certainly not worth paying for a Pro version of Win 7. If you really want this facility, I'd wait until Win 8 comes out potentially in the autumn.

One particularly excellent feature is Microsoft's Skydrive [...] that synchronises folders automatically via the web. Free to obtain, simple to set up, and brilliant in practice.

All in all, excellent value for money. A lovely piece of kit. I am delighted with it.

I definitely think it is a better choice than iPads unless you are planning on balancing your work/business needs with recreational use

So why have I given it only three stars? First of all because it is important to be aware of its limitations (and limitations that it most likely shared with all similar devices). Secondly because Amazon left it in the blue (recycling) bin. Perhaps, Amazon, if you read this review, you should have some policy regarding a price above which items will not be left insecure. I agree this is a convenient method for low value items, perhaps up to £50?

This machine was bought as factory refurbished. When unpacked it was as new. It performs admirably, though as yet the 8 hour battery life has not been verified. On the whole happy with this purchase.

I bought this as i needed a fairly small laptop. What a mistake! Sooooooooo slow. I know with the dual op system, it
might be a little slow but this is really bad! So after suffering for a month, sold it and bought the
Asus Eee PC VX6S Lamborghini 12.1 inch Netbook - Orange (Intel Atom D2700 2.13GHz, 4GB RAM, 500GB HDD, LAN, WLAN, Webcam, BT, Windows 7 Home Premium). What a difference !
Recommend you dont buy the Acer! Zero stars!

1.0 out of 5 stars Less than useless, 3 April 2012

This computer has made me more angry than most things in this world. It is slow, disobedient and seemingly has trouble with the simplest of tasks. I am unable to run Firefox, Spotify or indeed, do more than one thing at a time (including tabs on a browser). I cannot emphasise enough the utter catastrophe this computer is. I only gave it one star because there was no option low enough. Microsoft/Acer ought to hang their heads in shame.

The battery life is also a lie. It says 8 hours, which is the funniest joke I've heard in a while. It is in fact, three. My last netbook (Asus Eee PC) was four years older but had twelve hours battery life, even after four years of everyday use. In fact, it was better in every single way despite its age. I find myself longing for the day when I am able to scroll down a browser without the whole computer freezing for two minutes while it tries desperately to realise what's expected of it. I long for the day when it doesn't take ten minutes to turn off and asks two or three times whether you actually mean you want the thing to turn off. I long for the day when my computer does as I ask, instead of freezing up and then not doing it anyway.

I cannot tell you good people enough: DO NOT BUY THIS "COMPUTER". Do yourself a favour and buy an Asus netbook instead.
